One arm freestyle drill is a great way to work on body rotation and pulling motion. At the race club we teach swimmers to use different pulling motions for different events.
In longer distances we teach a high elbow pull. Depending on your strength we teach a deeper pull for the 50.

Olympian Dylan Carter demonstrates a deeper catch used in the 50 freestyle.

What remains the same no matter what distance is the rotation. We want the swimmer to have a powerful and fast rotation until the shoulders are vertical that sets up a more powerful pulling motion no matter what depth.

This drill is even better with the stationary arm in the stretch position.
