Having a dog has helped. When I see how happy he is to walk with me, it makes me happy. One other benefit of having a dog is how dogs love a daily routine. We are not "fair weather walkers". We walk every day, rain or shine. He and I are happy to be together! Nice!

Being diagnosed with mild anxiety depression which kept me on the couch often looking at TV and tablet.
Then I started c25k some years ago which was quite a challenge for me, and noticed a difference in my moods and feeling better, I kept up the jogging for a while but at the moment am walking more and join a local walking group once a week, so in general feel better when out walking which helps when I get home feeling happier and having achieved something.

Walking in natural surroundings is best. Cycling is also good, especially if on cycle paths or off-road tracks.

If you haven't exercised much recently, start very gently (low speed, distance and duration) and build up gradually over weeks and months.

Walking and cycling can be very low cost activities.

You can probably find walking and cycling groups in your area. These are good for social life as well as for physical exercise.

Feeling better connected with other human beings also helps lift depression and anxiety.

Find a group where the emphasis is on social interaction and support, not on competition.

All of the above is based on personal experience.

Enjoy!

Enjoy your blogs fir your brevity; clarity, uplifting presentation.

I would like to hear more about having a lack of opportunity to get Vut D living in chilly grey zones like I do iw( Seattle), and formerly( Wales). I use a light box and walk, but it’s still not jolly all the time. Suggestions welcomed!

Have been walking 6 miles a day for five days a week for many years. Lately I tried walking with less heel strike and have found it very enjoyable and a much faster way to walk. Rather than reaching out to stride I lengthen my legs before I push off from behind.
