Stalin had been the despotic dictator of the Soviet Union for nearly 30 years. Though he is now considered responsible for the deaths of millions of his own people through famine and purges, when his death was announced to the people of the Soviet Union on March 6th, 1953, many wept. His remains were put on display inside the transparent tomb, next to those of Vladimir Lenin. But in 1961, it was decided to remove Stalin from a place of honor. Why did the Soviet government change its mind?

When Stalin was alive Khrushchev was scared sh*tless of him as I'm sure most Soviet citizens were.

Khrushchev held a personal grudge against Stalin because he sentenced Khrushchevs son to death since he betrayed the soviets in ww2. Even though Khrushchev stood on his knees crying and begging him to let him live, Stalin did not let his tears irritate him and answered:, ,I have not exchanged my son for a german marshal. Why should I let a traitor live?’’

The fact that Lenin warned the Party about Stalin and what he was capable of doing spoke volumes

Mainly, Lenin wanted Trotsky to be the next leader, but Stalin overtook Trotsky and had him assassinated. Later on, Khurschev published Lenin's document of will and people knew the truth that Lenin never wanted Stalin to takeover.

Che Guevara visited the Mausoleum to pay tribute to Stalin when he was in the USSR in 1960, before his body was removed.

I was 11 then and remember it being greeted as wonderful news. Almost as good as when we had Climbed Mount Everest, And, the Coronation.

Kruschev was like: Quit Stalin and bury him already.

Wouldn't want to be in his shoes on judgment day.

Krushchev despite a peasant's background, abhorred the 'no big-deal sacrifice' of million Chinese soldiers by Mao, and decided to break with China.

He apparently died in his sleep on a sofa in his office. Stalin would normally be up and about in the morning so there was some mystery as to why he hadn't appeared. But everyone was terrified to knock on his office door. After hours had passed some people found the courage to investigate. A doctor was in attendance but was still afraid to touch the dictator. Stalin's brutal reputation was well earned - though he stood only 5' 1".

Khrushchev would've known he was apart of it. The USSR in my opinion is one of the most interesting tales of human history.

I've seen his grave and Lenin in the transparent tomb. It's impressive to be in front of someone who impacted the modern world to such an extent regardless of how you may feel about them.
