Beef Makes Other Asian American Shows Feel Outdated

Let’s face it: Asian American shows are predictable, even the modern ones released after 2015. Their themes often revolve around cultural differences and thus feature immigrant characters in central roles. While this gives the shows a distinct flavor to stand out from their Western counterparts, they also create the misleading impression that Asian Americans’ mainly struggle with trying to fit into Western society.

The 2023 Netflix series, Beef, is a breath of fresh air, presenting Asian American stories in a way that reflects current reality. We get to see Asian Americans in all their flawed glory, as they try to cope in an American society that divides people along class lines more commonly than racial ones.
