Hi Whitney, just wanted to say thank you so much for your videos. As someone who has struggled to keep up with good oral hygiene in my teenage and young adult days, I have been improving a lot lately but one of the remaining problems I have is that during my cleanings the hygienist always remarks that I have a lot of staining and tartar on my bottom lower teeth but no advice or explanation for it. Your explanation makes so much sense to me now as I'm a mouth breather (I have a deep bite and doing Invisialign to see if I can correct this) and also always brushed my teeth after breakfast, which I will change to first thing in the morning. So thank you so much for your advice and helping me improve my oral hygiene! Also I picked up so many little tips watching your videos, you have so much impact for good on people's lives and in an entertaining way. Thanks

I don't mean to downplay any hygienists job here but I'm sorry lol... I have always removed my own tartar build up at home with scaling tools I bought at Walmart for like 10 bucks.
I have only had 1-2 cavities (I'm 36) and my hygienist nor my dentist has ever been able to tell I do it at home or see any damage to my teeth. In fact I've always been told I'm "blessed with low tartar build up" hahaha. I'm not. I remove it myself.
I work in a repair type industry and I always recommend customers never do their own repairs.
Why? Because why would I tell a customer to DIY when they could pay me for the job. Could they do the repair? Probably. Would I ever tell them that? No way haha.

Yo, Whitney,

re: SAL'S TOP TEN TIPS to get mouth to PH of 7 so as to reduce bacteria/acidity which causes cavities:

1) Don't eat sugary foods or foods (eg carbs) that break down into sugars

2) Drink lots of water and then drink some more H20 to neutralize acidity

3) Brush your teeth properly before breakfast, at least 30 minutes after each meal, and then again before going to bed. IMHO Sonicare/Oral B electric toothbrushes do a much better job than a manual brush.

4) Always use a soft toothbrush with a fluoride toothpaste.

5) Use floss and picks to clean between your teeth before breakfast, after each meal and before bed.

6) Power wash your entire mouth with a waterpik, especially utilizing the various attachments to get between the teeth and along the gum line after each meal.

7) Use a non-alcohol mouthwash (eg ACT) after brushing, flossing/picks, and water piking; then don't rinse your mouth for at least 30 minutes.

8) Use oxylitic lozenges/chewing gum to stimulate saliva and neutralize acidity between meals.

9) See your dental hygienist regularly. ( Whitney, please move to Wyoming!!!)

10) Most of all, watch all of Whitney's super-awesome videos! Although she is incredibly witty and beautiful, please be advised that I am a subscriber only because of the excellent dental information provided (LOL!!!)

Peace & love to everyone's favorite dental hygienist, Whitney!!!

I don't know why I searched for the benefits of flossing daily the other day. We all know why, and yet I did. I have enjoyed viewing your positive message in all of your content.
It is difficult to reinforce the importance of oral healthcare. It is the first thing to be neglected when a person is stressed or dare I say depressed. When we stop the routine our problems seem to get worse, which is a terrible feeling. I think you have mentioned before that the bacteria in our mouths cause inflammation, not only in our gums but our entire body. I can see why because the easiest route into our bloodstream is via our oral cavity. Inflammation harbours more than what we believe.
On a side note, with self-scaling wouldn't a person have to stand on their head with a mirror in order to get a proper perspective? And another thing, when using a toothbrush, it is not a hockey stick that is supposed to bend and flex. Some guys must use two hands when brushing, or so it seems. I have been in people's homes; their toothbrushes are out and they look like they've been used on the floor, all mushed out of shape.

The recommendation to clean teeth for 2 minutes is not helpful and cost me a lot in dental care fillings and root canals. What would have been more useful is if dental offices taught me how to properly brush my teeth. After $10000s in dental care I only found out the proper technique from YouTube but never from the dental office and since I have implemented that my teeth and gums are so much healthier and my teeth are whiter where I get asked if I have had teeth whitening. Dental offices need to focus on proper brushing techniques when teaching

I asked my hygienist what she recommended on brushing before breakfast or after and she said it doesn’t matter as long as you do it in the morning. I’ve done it after breakfast all my life yet I haven’t had a single cavity lol

I have been watching your videos for some time now and I went back to the dentist today for my checkup/cleaning and they said I don’t know what you do to keep your teeth so clean but keep it up it’s working. I used to not be the best at taking care of my teeth but after watching your videos I now upgraded to an electric toothbrush and use it properly per your instructions and now I added flossing and a water pic to my teeth cleaning routine. I use to hate flossing because i didn’t know how to properly properly hold them to floss but I got those flossing pics and flossing has been so much easier. Thank you so much for your videos and your guidance on properly taking care of my teeth along with the help of my own dentist who I also use her suggestions for my personal care for my teeth.

I got reactive arthritis from using a dental pick that punctuated my gum tissue. 1, 5 days later I couldnt walk. I’ve been on crutches for the past week and on antibiotics. Spent a night in the ER and had relatives drive for hours only to help me buy food. Just a little warning against damaging your gums. I have zero plaque and zero cavities. It still happened.

I use a scaler then immediately wipe with a qtip to get the brown sticky tartar off. I brush twice a day but still get it bad. Probs the coffee and cigs

Do you suggest chewing gum as a tooth hygiene regimen? Idk, I chew gum every day, and lately I feel like maybe the stickiness to it picks up germs and debris and makes you swallow it automatically. I think the saw chewing gum after drinking coffee can help produce saliva and help.

Sure glad you enlightened me about the home scalers. I bought one of those battery operated ultrasonic scalers but was reluctant to try it because I thought I might damage my gums. Was just about ready to try it after it sat for a year-- until I saw your video. Very timely for me!
Had I moved forward with it a year ago I might have been visiting the periodontist. Whew! Thanks so much. It went right into the garbage where it belonged.

Genuinely appreciate the education. I've had much better conversations with my dental folks just knowing how to ask better questions. I leave appointments now feeling like I know what's happening in my mouth rather than just feeling like they said a bunch of jargon, and I figure they'd tell me if my teeth we're going to fall out.

This is very uncanny because I’m just about to detail my teeth lmfao. If you’re extremely fastidious you can easily scale yourself. I have a bad habit of letting my teeth hygiene slip due to past depression which cemented the habit. Again, the reason not to scale at home is the same reason not to daytrade; because vast majority of people will screw it up. I haven’t hurt myself even once

I’m a new subscriber & love you channel. Your teaching is the best & most complete I’ve ever seen. I’m am currently watching all your videos. Can you tell me the difference between soft picks & proxabrushes? Do they work equally well? I’m not sure which one to start with. I could not find this info on your web site. Thank you so much for your excellent work!
