NIGHT FISHING BAIT BASICS

Night fishing for bass can be a lot of fun! It can be dangerous on the lakes to be very careful but once you get in the action, make sure you have the basics on baits down. John Crews, veteran pro bass angler, talks about the basics of choosing baits for fishing at night for bass. Don't forget to tie a good knot and bring a light.

Crews I know you used to do the night derbies like the rest of us. Why don't you do a night fishing video. You've always been one of the pros I've respected and actually listened to. So don't forget your roots and hook us up with some footage of what most of us are doing

Finally someone else said it. I've always said fish seemed to have to transition from evening to night. I've always noticed a slow down in bites once it got dark.

The Spro BBZ-1 Rat is my Go To for when the sun goes down, I caught my PB LM 8# on a Mornign Dawn (also my favorite color) in the biggest size. My PB SM is a 7# I caught on a Little John DD in Citrus Light, now I see there is a 90 series DD, I will be picking up the Citrus Shad cause my new spot is has a hole that's probably 30' deep (I bank fish since I am disabled and dont have access to a boat). I have some friends that let me use their dock on Lake Sawyer here in WA State, it is super clear, amd deep, loaded with LM and SM, and the biggest Bass I know of being caught is 11# (there is a small shop near the lake that has a wall of pictures of the biggest catches)

Telling ya... It is REALLY tough to tell which way the other boats are going! Jitterbugs still kick it!

I went night fishing from the shore. Used a small popper lure. I had a couple rough casts and quickly reeled in. On my 3rd cast as soon as the lure hit the water I pulled in a bluegill that was huge. I have a keychain that's a scale that has a spring in it so who knows how accurate it is but the fish weighed 1lb on the keychain scale. The fish fought so hard. I thought it was going to be a good bass.

You been out on SML at night this year John? I'm out here tonight. Shad are just now coming to the bank. The shad was spawning big time few nights ago. There not doing anything tonight. Idk if this cold snap knocked em back a little or what? But anyway. Good video, solid info brother. Just wanna say you hit a home run on the Destroyer, black and blue, and that junebug one side, green punkin other side are my go to colors and my go to creature bait, c rig, Tokyo rig, heavy drop shot rig, Texas rigged, wobble head, anyway you wanna rig it Home run bait

Off topic, but an idea for a future video, and a topic that only a seasoned veteran should address. " Landing fish" I know it depends lots on the type of bait the fish is hooked with, but IMO I see more mistakes doing this, than any other aspect, with so many heart breaking results. It may take a collaboration depending on style, but there has to be some general dos and don'ts

You mess around with scents at night like the shad or craw sprays or waxes and markers? Intuition tells me that could turn that bite up a bit especially on something like a chatterbait, the vibration and scent would have to make it easier to find right?

Chatterbait will wreck em at night especially in grass lakes.

Yeah- it's not like all the baitfish and craws turn black after dark- and the bass have no problem eating them so, they shouldn't have any problem eating baits in more natural tones. I've never gotten the chance to fish for bass at night but once- and that was just a little farm pond so- I know very little about it but- simple logic tells you that much. I would assume they use their lateral line more at night but- I think ppl misunderstand that. Their lateral line is extremely sensitive- you don't necessarily need a spinner bait or trap or something really violent or loud to get their attention.
