Always apply for other jobs, go to interviews, by the time you get the boot, at least you are already having some other jobs on the line.

if hr is helping you then the boss really f'd up, just be sure you can prove it and cover your ass as much as possible. check if you live in a state that doesnt require the consent of others for recording, dont abuse it, and use that to record all conversations you have as well as always ask for instructions in writing when you feel something is off or cant do it within the timeframe given.
