We can probably debate the “gear” and “speed”, but props to you for having a cross wind above 2 knots like most docking videos. You are one of the few that did a docking video with tough conditions.

Nice video mate but it’s “prop walk” that pulls a shaft driven boat in reverse.
Prop wash is a different thing

Great video and not easy wind conditions! But I'd like to add another 'rule' when docking wich is: "When in doubt, go around". Ive seen many sailors that ended up in trouble because they wanted to make a one shot entrance and ended up making things worse... And of course practice, practice and practice. Learn to know the behavior of your vessel in various conditions. Anyways, thanks for sharing this video!

Man alive, I was on the edge of my seat watching you do this. Thank you so much for sharing this serious and challenging docking procedure. That was brilliant, despite what you think was an error. I saw it as a great example. Beautiful. I am just learning this whole sailboat thing. I'm subscribed now!

Nice job!

Have you considered the alternative to back up in a ”curve”, towards the wind, allowing the bow to swing *towards* the wind, just when entering the slot? That way, the bow carries some momentum to counteract the effect pf the wind ?

I don’t agree that you made a mistake… difficult conditions, and everything always changes at the most inopportune moment. You hit nothing and damaged nothing, so nothing to beat yourself up for. Biggest risk when docking imho is the ‘skipper’ on the dock you starts ‘helping’ as you approach…

Careful control of the prop using a combination of forward and reverse in combination with the rudder you can "walk" the boat sideways . My Acapulco 40 responds nicely at about 3/4 lock on the rudder in reverse gear to pull the boat sideways onto the dock bow first but I have never tried "backing in" as she does not steer very well in reverse . Nicely done on getting into a tight space in those conditions . It really is a case of having a feel of what the vessel is going to do well in advance and how it responds in all conditions .

Number 6: wear shoes during maneuvers. You don't want to cut your feets

outstanding job, and not completely but do agree with AF comment, I myself leave them in gear, there are times when I kick it to N

Great tips! But I'd disagree on always staying in gear. When you're in the middle of a turn and see that you're going too wide, putting a small forward for a second or two can reduce your speed enough to make the turn tighter while still maintaining manouverability. Of course you need to be mindful of the wind and that it will want to drift the bow, as you've mentioned.

I admired your skills. When talking gear, I thought you also would mention shoes. I never do this kind of manouvres without proper shoes. You so easily get injured.

When you go in stern to, between 2 boats it's easier, when you are in the job is done. What I find most difficult solo docking in a boat with no bow thrust like mine is when you have a wide space like 2 boats or more. In that case as you near the pontoon thd bow gets swept by the cross wind and the boat gets sidewise. The only way I found is to get the windward stern line fast on the dock as soon as you near the dock, put the boat in gear with the rudder all to the wind. For this to work it is vital that the guys on the dovk understand immediately they need to take and make fast the stern line without even thinking about the bow lines. Unfortunately this does not happen most times.
