What happens when an IPhone, or possibly any smartphone, is exposed to an electromagnetic pulse (EMP)? This short video demonstrates what happens when an IPhone 5 is exposed to a strong electromagnetic pulse as well as why it happens. Also, this video answers some frequently asked questions like "Can this EMP permanently destroy electronics?" We All know that an EMP can be very destructive to electronic devices. I hope you enjoy this video as much as I did making it, I also hope you learned some useful information from the video.

Also what you may not realize is that, the sudden voltage and current surges in the iPhone may have degraded some of the semiconductors within which over time start to fail reducing the life or reliability of the phone.

Thank you for your scientific informational video. I have a couple questions regarding your experiment. 1st. I noticed that you were wearing a electronic wrist watch and I was curious if your watch suffered any damages. 2nd In your opinion could the shielding that Apple and Gameboy used behave similar to how a faraday cage does. I know there's a lot of people on YouTube that does videos on if you have seen the YouTube video by FPS Weapons "DIY Jammer" where he makes a EMP Jammer device and allegedly kills two devices a IPhone and a Gameboy. I wouldn't call it a jammer personally as that's not what a EMP does. I would like to know if you think in your personal opinion if he fried the electronic devices and if so would that have been the same as if he would of had some power surge type effect by what he used.

Is it possible to emp car speakers wireless? Just curious since in my country there are a lot of these assholes who use big subwoofers and cars alarms go on.

So I understood an emp to be something that affects all electronics in an area. How did you get it to only affect the phone and not your recording camera?

Yup....a standard home safe, especially with some conductive 'weather' type door pads will provide decent protection from emp....(of course depending on the proximity of the source of the pulse)

understanding that distance from an event will minimize the impact of an emp to you, can you calculate what an estimated EMP net effect would be to you if you were lets say 50 miles from you?

Nice job. It’s not a nuclear pulse test, but it does show what a minor emp can do. It is what it is.

is there a way to make this with stronger amperage ? maybe different coil structure will help ?

Now increase the power 1000 times and you will have the effect of the 1859 Carrington Event, which was 1000 times weaker than what a man made EMP from a high altitude Nuclear Explosion will be. It is unlikely high voltage power lines would survive, let alone microchips.

I'm not sure how I got to this video, but I'm glad I did. It was strangely captivating to see if the iPhone would be fried.
Though this does lead to an obvious question. What if it was a phone that has a wireless charging loop built in? The charging coil must be outside the RF shielding, so in theory it would funnel the massive pulse of power straight into the phones main board, but do phone manufacturers think about this, and do anything fancy to prevent EM pulses from damaging their devises this way?
