I feel that. Learning rhythm more at the start is very very important because not only does it allow your lead playing to fit in the song rhythmically, it also somewhat makes you think about the context of the lead in the song moreso than just blindingly fast arps and sweeps.
I was a rhythm guitarist first and foremost in my band but then the lead guitarist left before we finalised any material and we were left with a void of solos and nobody to write and track them. Forced me to learn lead and really thinking about what the song needed which was fab.
