Which frame rate should you use—24 FPS or 30 FPS? Both have their unique qualities. As a cinematographer and video editor, I prefer 24 FPS for that cinematic Hollywood feel, while 30 FPS is ideal for smooth and fast action shots. Let’s break it down!

While 24 frames per second (fps) was the standard during the era of analog film, largely due to technological and cost limitations, it is not the sole frame rate capable of producing a "cinematic" look.
In 2025, digital cinematography offers a wide range of frame rates far beyond the traditional 24fps—such as 30, 48, 60, 96, 120, 144, and even 240fps. These higher frame rates provide filmmakers with greater creative flexibility, enhanced motion clarity, and new aesthetic possibilities that were simply not feasible with analog film.
With the advanced capabilities of modern digital cameras, there's little reason to restrict oneself to legacy frame rates like 24fps or 16fps. Instead, filmmakers should embrace the expanded toolkit available in the digital age to craft visuals that best serve their creative vision.
