This does NOT make them safe for babies! I recently saw a post on Facebook of a woman who's teething infant grabbed an amigurumi that she has made for someone else and literally bit the eye off. The back broke off and the baby was sloshing the eye around in its mouth. Luckily momma got it away from the baby before any choking occurred! DO NOT USE SAFETY EYES ON BABY/TODDLER TOYS! Over age 3 only people!!

Don't do this! Doing this will damage the integrity of the plastic, which over time will result in the post snapping off. If you are having problems with safety eyes coming apart it could be that the backing being used is too big. Safety eye backing come in different sizes for different sized safety eyes. So make sure you are using the correct sized backing for the safety eyes being used. If for some reason you still have an issue with them coming apart use a small amount of washable craft glue just around the post, then snap the backing in place. But please don't melt the post to try and get them to stay in place.

Maybe this is a different brand and it’s made different or something but with most of the safety eyes I’ve seen and used they stay on fine without having to melt the ends

Those burnt plastic fumes can't be good for you. And I've never had the issue of safety eyes coming off, ever. Infact I had the opposite issue, I wanted to reposition the eyes but i couldn't remove them for the life of me and ultimately i had to cut the backing to remove it

A word of caution when doing this. The melted parts can break off and the eye comes out presenting a choking hazard.

Awesome..thank you. I was actually going out to buy crazy glue to make sure the backing would stay on...and BAM here you are with the perfect answer. Many thanks, all the best💘

This actually makes them LESS safe. It weakens the integrity of the plastic. I was already leery of buying stuff with plastic eyes for my baby, but if this is common amongst crafters I definitely won't be buying any now.

Heating plastic weakens its integrity and makes it possible for it to break easier.

Stop! No matter what you do, they are not safe, just harder to choke on until the baby gets a little older.

This is helpful but u can use yarn for the eyes too not to complain

This is useful when you're making small toys and the post from the eyes makes them stick out weirdly, pointless if it's just to stop them falling out though cos they're designed specifically not to do that 😅
