Why are you talking about me in this video? How did you know that I'm looking at TV, and snacking.  Thanks for waking me up!

I really wish the internet, specifically YouTube and your channel, was around when I first picked up the guitar at 13 yrs old! My brother was self taught, then showed me some of what he learned. We both played by ear, using tablature for harder songs. I'd usually play rhythm while he played lead, but he eventually taught me some leads from Ozzy, Zeppelin and Iron Maiden lol. I thought I sucked and would give up for days, then come back to it. I didn't own a guitar and would borrow my brother's Washburn acoustic. Being a young girl with very tiny hands made playing bar chords so frustrating, that I'd skip learning most songs with them. Sometimes I'd be determined to push through the pain in my hands and fingers to play along, but eventually would feel like throwing the guitar because I couldn't "get" some chords down, or the pic would keep flying out of my fingers! I played until 19, when my brother moved out and took his guitars.

I didn't touch a guitar again until 8 years later, when I dated a guy in a band. He left his guitar at my house, unaware I ever played. I picked it up the next morning to see if I remembered, and started playing along by ear to an Everlast song. My bf was in shock when he came over and saw me playing his guitar, an ended up buying me my own guitar for my 27th birthday lol.

Everything you said in this video was exactly how I felt learning as a teen, and why I ultimately stopped trying to progress. I wish that I could've paid for lessons to improve, and bought myself a guitar that fit me better! I believed only super talented people conquered guitar and it wasn't meant to be anything but a fun hobby for me. Looking back now after watching some of your videos, I think if I was playing leads from "Diary of a Madman" at 15, I couldn't have sucked that bad! Who knows, I could've been the next Nancy Wilson or Lita Ford, had I heard this advice back then haha! Anyone now trying to learn guitar is so lucky to have the internet. It would be a waste to not use these videos for resources AND encouragement! Sorry for the long comment. I just love this channel! THANK YOU!🎸

I agree that every body who starts the guitar is having a hard time, my self personally I did something that most guitar players take for granted . I had to nurture that desire for 2 years before my dad, God rest his soul, let me even touch the guitar .so that 2 years waiting is steel after more than a decade present in me, the same fresh desire ... it's very beautiful to sing at something that you feel an intense desire for .my fingers also hurt at the beginning but i wasn't giving up and now the guitar even if i do not play hard songs brings me joy and happiness every time i pick up the guitar . tank you for sharing this powerful motivation clip and i hope that everyone who take this step will be rewarded a thousant times more if and only if they have ears to listen to you .

First ever guitar vid with the word, "Poopie" in it that I've seen. Seriously, great pep talk and good info on remaining dedicated to practicing and getting better.

I just found your videos and have to tell you: I've been struggling with these concepts for years and for the first time in many years I'm inspired to practice again. Thank you for speaking out to those of us who struggle with the frustration of not grasping the material and being SUPER hard on ourselves. Your compassion and warmth shine through these videos. Much appreciated. I'll be listening (and practicing)!

This video is incredibly empowering, thank you for this! I recently quit guitar lessons because the teacher constantly got frustrated with me every time I messed up. You're a great instructor! I'm only 15 and I've only been playing since I was 12 but I know I'll improve if I keep trying. Thanks again!

I've been playing for a long time now with no formal lessons, decided to buy a looping station and discovered that now I need to learn to play with a metronome or else the looper just isn't gonna work. So to everyone out there, get a visual metronome app and start practicing with it!

45 years old, on oxygen, fighting disability and sick... my son loaned me one of his many guitars, (he's in a band). I like to sing gospel melodies and anthems to America, wanted to try. my son gave me light strings... I just learned what the cords are in a couple minutes! thank u tons!

Hi Erich, I’d like to say how glad I am for following all of your streams. I love scrolling through and seeing your videos and funny guitar jokes and puns. I often find myself laughing so hard because they’re so relatable. Your posts have opened me up to different genres and styles and I couldn’t be more grateful. I love the skate sessions with your little guy proving you’re just as fun outside of your lessons. It’s great to see your generosity and all of the amazing things you do for your subscribers. It’s reassuring to know there are still some true humanitarians out there. Thank you so much for this opportunity.

Hey sir one of the best things I learnt on my guitar is when I discovered the fact strumming isn't about down up and up down but about timing ... It was such a relief I could totally relate this video in my case .

I never had the problem with my fingers hurting. Is that a problem? The best and hardest song i can ‘play’ is last resort - papa roach. Ive been improving a lot and i can almost do it at the right speed

Great summary. I think the parent of every young-age, new guitarist should watch this video. That way they can always encourage the new guitarist by saying "remember what the guitar sage said..."

Good advice. I am trying to muster back up and get back learning again. My biggest problem is my back. Sitting I can only play for a little bit at a time before my lower back gives me fits. Standing is not even close to happening. Makes my back worse ( degenerating disc and 40 yr old mechanic) . The tough easy no problems. One other habit hard to break, I grip wrenches and bars all day long- get rough turning wrenches all day and then trying to force a rookie hand to be agile around a fret board.

Great advice. The best teachers remember what it was like when they first started playing guitar. I particularly like your advice to fight through when disheartened because everybody gets disheartened. Not many of the top guitarists speak about the troubles they had in the beginning. They seem to have had this inherent ability from the start especially those who say they taught themselves.

Thank you for all the help on the guitar! you are a terrific teacher and have a good sense of humor, which helps make it fun, when it can get tedious. .The details and tips you give make all the difference in how it sounds. By not skipping these details, you let me know that playing correctly is extremely hard work, but well worth the effort. I am 72 years old and have been working on the guitar for about one year. I appreciate the influence you try to have on the young generation. you are a good role model for them and me! As you always say"your mother will be proud of you!" Thanks again! Donald Hulsey
