Liz Truss has resigned as prime minister, leaving office after just 45 days.

Announcing her decision to step down, Ms Truss confirmed there will be another Tory leadership election, to be completed within the coming week.

But who could become the new prime minister?

Rishi Sunak remains the bookmaker’s favourite, followed by Penny Mordaunt, because of their vow to control inflation.

Defence secretary Ben Wallace is another possible contender, while the chances of Boris Johnson getting back into Downing Street are still low.

they just elected a leader and apparently Truss was the best the Tories have. If that's the case it's time for a general election and we can hopefully get a government that can at least go a few weeks without disaster.

We need a general election, they cannot put in TWO unelected prime ministers

It seems that our only hope now is to vote for the Reform Party.

Just highlights what a sorry state we are in. A group of people totally out of touch with reality. Could it honestly get any worse…

But the UK’s shortest serving prime minister will still receive severance pay to the tune of £18, 860 – £419.11 for each day she served in the top job – according to independent fact checkers Full Fact.
This is also, roughly, a year’s salary for someone aged 23 earning the national minimum wage (also called national living wage).

The only one who's done a good jab at Number 10 these last 5 years is Larry the Cat. So maybe they should offer him the role.

She sidled in, gave away our armed forces to the EU/UN and then buggered off lasting just long enough to gain her PM pension. I like her style.
