I'm 30! 5 Lessons I Wish I Knew Sooner

It's the end of 2020, and I just turned 30. In the last couple years, I quit my safe and lucrative career path as a plastic surgeon, started 3 businesses, and learned many lessons along the way. To say it's been a crazy ride would be an understatement. These are the 5 lessons I've learned that I wish someone had told me sooner.

TIME STAMPS:
00:25 - Deliberately Choose Your Future & Work Toward It
01:52 - Seize Opportunities (Often Hidden in Plain Sight)
03:39 - Enjoy the Journey, Not the Destination
05:10 - Frequently Question & Reflect on Your Priorities
08:02 - Celebrate the Small Wins

Your speech about health really struck a chord with me, it's so easy to forget the blessing of good health. One of my favourite Arabic proverbs is "health is the crown on the head of the healthy, that only the sick can see." What can be enjoyed when your in pain or discomfort, not much, and not to the full.

I need to make my health my first priority, rather than making it the first thing to sacrifice when something "important" like work or studying comes around.

Thank you,

I'm currently in my 2nd year of med school, overwhelmed with a lack of social life from COVID and glooming upcoming step1. This inspires me to keep going.

Extremely wholesome advice. As an older non-trad premed, I've been trying to figure out how to pound "enjoy the journey" into my head to avoid getting bored or burning out.

I want a successful career in medicine earning money and loving my job, but I want to live through my 20s not just studying, I want a family, and a lifestyle, with time.

Thank you for this! I remember watching your old videos about hyperproductivity in high school and feeling like I was never doing enough, and was also comparing myself to everyone around me. Now that I'm a sophomore college, I'm learning more and more that competitiveness with others turns toxic so quickly, and often just makes me feel worse. I have also learned more and more that I need to prioritize my HAPPINESS and TAKE TIME to sleep, eat healthy, and exercise. I often sacrificed these things early on, but now I realize that they actually make me more productive and actually ENJOY THE JOURNEY. Now im working towards something that makes me happy versus trying to look better around others! and I am actually more successful, and loving what I'm doing!

This video has made me really reconsider my future life choices. I am still a premed and will be deciding whether to pursue medicine or dentistry, both careers having different lifestyles.
