Here is my understanding: The term "NOTHINGNESS" came from Lao Zi Dao De Jing (or Lao Tzu Tao Te Ching). It means that the universe was in an energy state (waves?) before the first particle was formed. Big Bang happened when the intertwined energies (waves) reached a certain level. After the Big Bang, THINGS (particles, clouds, planets, and galaxies) started to form. To the universe, it's always just energy. THINGS only matters to humans because these are the energy forms can be detected by our 5 senses.

From what we guess, the universe may have had a beginning, but we may never know. We certainly don’t know how it’s going to end… maybe some of our atoms and particles may witness it after humanity is long gone.
