Thank you for clarifying, I was afraid to end up with an incompatible ssd if I went for the regular version and not the ps5 official version, this video helped.

I bought it, and the cool thing about it is that you do not need to hook up to computer and do firmware update just install and update with PS5 and my read speed speed was at 6600

I heard a lot of errors from people here. I will correct few things. There are 3 wd 850 versions : 850 the 850x and the 850p. The 850 is running too hot. I would not use it in ps5. At least without a beefy heatsink. Without heatsink is not recommended for a ps5. The 850x has a bit better thermals with the heatsink but still running at 80C with the heatsink, and 57, 5C outside in the ps5. It has gamemode useless and even inferior in most cases, it is compatible with direct storage api in pc and faster speed. In a pc it is good, personally i think it will still run very hot for a ps5. But it has good performance, however the ps5 cannot use all the features. The 850p is official ssd, and a beefier heatsink for ps5, i think they have reduce the specs to fit better the thermals of the ps5. It probably still run hotter than a samsung 990 pro with heatsink and even without heatsink a 990 pro is running cooler than the 850x with a cooler heatsink.
The 850p is probably better for ps5 than the 850x and of course the 850 that i wouldn’t use in a ps5. I would not be surprised if the 850p get better real world result than 850x despite inferior specs inside a ps5. For a pc i would go with the 850x
This is my opinion. I could be wrong but i rarely does.

The official drive is the only way to get a 4TB model with an included heatsink. The standard SN850 and newer SN850X do not include a heatsink with their 4TB models

Very good video. Im glad you made this, especially since many people spending their money on this are kids, who may not know better.

The 850x seems to be cheaper, even though it is the higher performing drive in a PC. In the PS5 it seems as if the 850 holds an extremely small edge. If you were not performing a test side by side you would never notice. You will not notice loading a game. I honestly think these drives can completely saturate data to the PS5 CPU/GPU. Let's be honest, these gaming consoles do not use very fast hardware. They are underpowered budget chips. So lots of people split hairs over this stuff and it really doesn't matter much. The only time it may make some difference is transferring games from PS5 internal to the M2. SSD, and you might see a 30 second difference (Tops) on a move of 300-400 GB. When you look at the transfer speed it averages 1.6GB for each second or so that the PS5 data indicator shows when moving the file. A far cry from the 5-7 GB/sec. these drives are capable of. In a system like this the HD is no longer the bottleneck, (when that used to always be the case.)

Just picked up two of these drives (2TB) for $159 each at time of this writing. Also if you want to use in PS5, pick up this drive w/out heat sink and the Sabrent heat sink for PS5 for $20. The Sabrent Heatsink/Cover will keep your SSD cooler than the other SSD's that already come with Heatsink and the PS5 cover in place. Then you are at $179+tax for one of the fastest/best rated drives right now, with a heatsink which can be reused with any other SSD you want to put in your PS5 if you wish to upgrade later, hot swap, or if your drive fails, which (They do).

I prefer the official PS5 version. For me, it has to be approved by Playstation in order for me to actually wanna buy it. Its an ADHD thing. There's an 8 TB version as well but I dunno when they'll make it compatible for PS5.

It's important to note that neither of these drives are being fully taken advantage of by the PS5. The read speed saturates at a top of 6700 MB/s on PS5. So 7000MB/s is more than enough. The write speed is completely insignificant, as the PS5 only fully utilizes the write speed when moving games over to the M.2 drive. But even then, the write speed tops out at 2-3GB/s regardless of which drive you use.

I think for the average consumer who isn't super tech-savy, going for the SN850P makes more sense, since just the idea of it being officially Playstation certified may bring some inner peace.

Compared to the older, sure. However, it's not just down to pure read/write, but how it is designed. The SN850X is more designed and aimed at PC users who game and stream. There are other Gen4 m.2 drives that are faster than the SN850X – but, it's still a great drive!

The newer versions of the SN850P has a bigger heatsink.

So yes, there is a difference.

On paper the sn850x looks like a no brainer especially since it’s 50 dollars cheaper than the sn850 now. But in practice the sn850 is better.

I got the non offical WD SN850 2TB with heatsink for 177 bucks during prime day a couple of weeks ago and couldn't be happier. I also decide to go for the A95K instead and got the 65inch version which is getting delievered in 3 days. Samsung constantly changing the S95B firmware and updating your tv without your consent eventhough you have your tv not in auto update mode was the tipping point for me.
