I've been on a 3 years cycle for my iPhones the last few years. In 2018 I got the XS Max and had it for 3 years, then in 2021 I got the 13 Pro Max and now 3 years later I have just gotten the 16 Pro Max. It's a beautiful phone, I love the dynamic island and the smaller bezels. I wouldn't say it's a massive difference/upgrade, but I got a good deal from my carrier so I don't feel too bad about upgrading.

I have an iPhone 14 plus product red I got it in December of 2023, it is my first iPhone and apple product. I think the iPhone 13 mini product red would pair good with what I have.

Battery of 13 pro max got worse and worse with each updates. I updated to 16 pro max and it’s great again
