In this video I demonstrate the knitting style of "flicking" and switching between knits and purls in rib and seed stitch.

You can see all of my slow-motion videos here:
You can see my other flicking videos here:

The scarf on the mannequin is Lighten Up, here is my project on Ravelry:
The needles I'm using are Knitter's Pride DPNs:
The yarn I'm using is Paintbox Aran.

I love knitting like this. It has made ribbing and seed stitch much easier. When I first tried it, I found it very difficult because I thought all the movement came from the yarn finger. It was only when I watched your video several times that I realized that the levering back and forth of the needle is what puts the tip of the needle in the right place. Then it all became very easy. Hope this helps people just trying this for the first time.

I learned how to flick by watching you knit. Now I knit like you!

I'm so glad to hear you say this is how you knit. I'm a crocheter turned knitter and I've been knitting this way since I started. I hold a crochet hook like a pencil and this feels very natural to me. I also can go at a good pace while flicking. Thanks for the video.

I've been doing that for a few months now and it really helps you knit faster. I didn't know it was a thing. One day I just thought what if I move the yarn front or back before I finish a stitch, and it works. Thank you for all your tutorials.

Your videos are reassuring as they describe how I knit with circular needles. As a natural pit knitter, I avoided circular needles for many years as it felt very awkward to have a right needles that was not anchored under my right arm. However, when I look at your videos I realize this is a good illustration of how I have adapted my knitting style to Knitting with circular needles.

I’ve been unsuccessful so far but I’m not giving up - frustrated with being such a slow knitter - thank you so much for your “in the moment” videos - so appreciate that they aren’t edited 🥰

I learned to knit from your channel and became a flicker without realizing! I love using the flicking technique with combination knitting while making double knit or ribbed projects. It really helps you know ifyou need to knit or purl based on how the yarn is mounted on the needle. Really saves time and prevents mistakes. I also find it’s easier to switch between yarn colors this way. Just faster all around! Thanks for being a great teacher.

thank you Staci -- I watched your flicking videos about a year ago and re-taught myself how to knit that way. I learned to knit by holding the end of the needle in my lap, which worked ok for using full length needles, but as I transitioned to mostly using dpns and circular needles my knitting was awkward and uncomfortable -- flicking completely changed that! The only thing that I do different is hold the wool around my finger the opposite way that you do. Purling took a little while to get used to, but I'm getting better every time I work on a knit/purl project. Thanks for your great videos!

I have watched all of your flicking videos. The one thing I can't ever manage to do is to fluidly keep the left needle stitches moving toward the tip and the stitches on the right moving away from the tip. I end up having to break momentum by stopping to adjust the stitches.

for many years I knit by bending and unbending my index finger and 30 years later, arthritis is now setting in. I think I found my own style, based upon your video. It's still very new but it seems to work. Thank you for the detail you went to to share.

This is how my mum taught me to knit when I was little and she was taught by an elderly lady to knit this way as well. I find it fast and really easy!

I taught myself to knit, so probably have bad habits with the method. Definitely struggle with this. I'm one of those who has to have the yarn wrapped over every other finger to control it bc I can't seem to hang on to the yarn 🧶 Then I let go of the needle. It's "fast" but not as fast as this. Thank you for showing this in slow-mo.

I flick as well but I like how you set yourself up for the next stitch with one fluid motion. I’m going to practice that! Thank you - very helpful!

Very satisfying! Such a nice and economical style. I’ve always sort of dropped the right needle but I think it’s because I learnt as a child with small hands and I’ve never adjusted much (hands didn’t get much bigger tbh). It’s quite a commitment to change your style - subtly different muscle use and sacrificing your tension for a while, but if I was starting out I would absolutely go textbook flicking and build my speed! My speed is definitely hampered by my style!

I have struggled with this technique, but I was not moving my needle like you. I will try again! Thanks!
