Oil Painting Thinners and Mediums | Oil Painting Basics Series

Don't get confused when it comes to oil painting thinners and mediums. There are a lot of options out there, but once you know exactly what these do, you'll feel confident stocking up for your studio on your next visit to the art store.

Paint thinners like turpentine or mineral spirits or terpenoids are to oil what water is to acrylic, and I recommend you get the least chemical-fume smelling, aka odorless, one for your own health and safety.

Mediums help oil paints retain varying degrees of elasticity as well as effect dry time, but they all operate in much the same way.

Thank you for this. I have been using acrylic for nearly two decades and like you said in another video, I was hesitant to switch because of all the thinners / reading tina about toxicity etc. this was very very helpful

THANK YOU! Yes oil painting seems so difficult to figure out well before putting brush to canvas! Lol. I started out with oils and gave it up because of all the seemingly conflicting information out there. Was just too overwhelming. So thank you for your insight!! I may just be brave enough to pull the oil paints out once more!!!

I don't do much oil painting and I'm rather a beginner at it and you've got some very helpful tips. But I don't use any kind of turps, even the odorless kind. I use Gamblin's gel medium (it's made for oil painting) to thin or maybe Lindseed oil sometimes. To clean brushes, I use a soap that has a good degreaser or a brush soap made esp for brushes and most dishwashing liquid does. There are also citrus based cleaners that work well, but they are solvent based and not good to get on your skin, although I think there are some that may be safer. If my oil brushes get real gunky, I will on occasion use mineral spirits to clean them. But some people won't even paint with oils at all if they have to use strong chemicals, so it's good there are some safer choices these days.

Every single thing that you said would happen if we don't "do the right to me last night. It's so funny to learn this from you after the fact. I mean everything happened; it was quite the circus. I'll stay tuned with you. Thank you.

I found odorless paint thinner at the hardware for 10$ Litre instead of 46$ for 32 oz at the art store.

Thank you so much for sharing. 💖 Are oil paints in themselves toxic? I feel nervous about the mediums and thinners, so I use pure paint. 🤔

I’m a minor who is interested in learning how to paint using oil paints. Up until this point I have only been sketching in a sketchbook and using colored pencils. This is a huge jump of art style and my parents are concerned of the safety of using oil paints and all the toxic mediums and thinners. I also can’t drive on my own and dispose of the rags and toxic materials. Should I wait to use oil paints till I can handle them on my own?

Do you have to thin your oil paint or you can just use it the way it comes?

Terpenoid original is non-toxic and nonflammable but I heard if you use it as a paint thinner your paint will not dry. Is that true?

Is 'odorless' less toxic? Aae you not breathing in fumes even when you cannot smell them?

Thanks for the valuable information.
My oil painting looks dul, not shinny or alive. Do I need gloss varnish after words or something else.

Hi thank you so much for this video. I had a question about the rags. I usually use acrylics and have a rag that I leave in my painting area for wiping my brush and I reuse it with each session. Can I do the same for oils or do I need to put my rag in a sealed container every time between sessions?
