Brian explains how to make a DIY water filter using everyday materials! Perfect for camping trips, survival situations, or even a fun science project with the kids, this homemade filter uses multiple layers of filtration medial to remove impurities from water. Whether you're looking for a practical skill or a fun DIY project, this video offers a valuable lesson in water filtration and resourcefulness.

📝 Materials List:

- A plastic bottle
- Knife
- Gravel of different sizes
- Sand, both fine and coarse, if possible
- Cotton, bandana, sock, or similar
- And activated charcoal

✅ How to Build It:

1. First step is to cut off the bottom third or so of the bottle. Flip the top of the bottle upside down and place it in the bottom for stability.

2. Now, we'll add all the filter materials, starting from the bottom: First we need to add a material that will hold everything else above it. If you have it, cotton balls work great. But if you’re in a survival situation anything made of cloth like a bandana or even a sock will work just fine

3. Next break down the charcoal into small pieces using a hammer or a rock. We want these to be as small as we can get them, ideally pea sized or smaller. Then add the charcoal on top of your first layer

4. Next, add a layer of sand, the finer, smaller grains the better. Then add a layer of coarse sand on top of the fine sand if you can find it

5. Finally, pour in the gravel, leaving about an inch of space at the top. Just like with the sand, if you can get a couple layers of different sized gravel all the better.

⚠️ Important Note About Disinfection:

One important thing to remember is that while this DIY filter can remove some impurities, it's not a guaranteed replacement for commercial water filters or municipal water treatment.

So if you're relying on this for drinking water, especially in a survival situation, it's important to disinfect the water before drinking it.

The easiest method is to simply boil the filtered water before using it.
You can also sterilize it using UV, or chemically disinfect it with iodine tablets or unscented bleach.

Fantastic love it! Grid down this would be a great way to filter before using your commercial filters as well. This way you could prolong their use.

Cattails work amazingly well to filter water. If you dont have cotton balls, look for the hot dog looking cattails! They make great fire starter too!

I live in NC where the mountain towns lost everything. They need clean water. I want to put together some distillation and purification kits to help but need to be inexpensive to help more families. What would you suggest?

Thank you! I just found you recently. I found out from the city I live in, I have lead in my water. I would love a video of what we can do to protect are selfs! I will have to look back and maybe you have done one already. I can't keep house plants alive! I have been drinking this water and making coffee with it for six years.

Very interesting. Thank you.
Could you make a video going into more detail about the disinfecting processes with iodine and bleach?

Somebody could make a fortune making a "kit" of all the ingredients to sell as a. package. I would buy one in a hot second and NO ONE offers anything at all of this idea.

I would suggest throwing a bandana, old T-shirt, or other piece of cotton over the whole thing, before use, covering the opening. This filters out bigger stuff such as leaves, twigs, bugs, etc. and allows the filter to last longer. Even if you don't or can't make this type of filter, you can use this to pre-filter any water you use from nature and make your regular filter last longer. I know that pond water (or whatever it was) makes for a bigger visual impact, but there's no way I would put anything that nasty into a filter of any kind without pre-filtering it first.

Great video! Thanks for sharing the steps to create this simple filter from (mostly) natural materials.
