Understanding “Dangerous” Air Quality

Thank you, BetterHelp, for sponsoring this video!

Most people never paid much attention to air quality, until they were told they couldn't go outside because smoke from forest fires was blowing in from another country! That happened in June 2023, and this video is my journey learning about the Air Quality Index (AQI), how it's calculated, and how you can make the most of your weather app information to make the best decision for your health.

Here in the area of Montréal we got lucky, the intense smog covered us for about a day and now the air is (mostly) back to normal. Thanks alot for the info, I legitimately understood nothing about it other than "big smoke smell bad"

The Canadian AQHI doesn't actually have an upper limit. A couple summers ago, when a "heat dome" was trapping wildfire smoke, the AQHI here in Vancouver BC was in the 40s.

This is unrelated to this video but you're the reason why I bought the "linga latina" book and am now learning latin, just felt like I had to say that lol

I highly recommend Cambridge Pro masks. They are highly effective against fine particulates like smoke. When properly fitted, you cannot even smell smoke. The useful lifetime of the mask is dependent upon the air quality.

This was highly informative! Ever since the AQI reached 250 in Grand Rapids, MI (where I work) on Tuesday, I've been looking into all of these indices with great interest.

I'm just north of Detroit. There's been a haze in the air all week. Last night it looked like the moon was shrouded in fog. Crazy stuff.

Thanks for covering this! I've also been watching this, as it's also gotten to northwestern PA in the past few days, obscuring the skyline and the view of town across the river, which usually only happens on foggy days! Friends of mine have said they and their children have had asthma issues, though somehow I haven't been affected by that yet.

I also divide my time between Pennsylvania and Italy, can't believe there is someone else! Inside all week in PA due to the fires, lockdown seems to follow me wherever I go!

Great video! I always see your videos in Italy, and little did I know you’re my southeastern PA neighbor and I’d get a great video on the biggest news we’ve had in a while.

Interesting video! Living in Alberta, spring/summer means wildfire season now. BC, AB, and SK are all on fire right now, and in May/early June the smoke was so bad the sky was red in some parts. Went outside with a mask. I'm sure we will see more of this in the coming weeks as the season just officially started...

Yesterday i had off from work and i usually go for a walk whilst calling my grandmother, but the air was in the 150s it said. I ultimately decided to just go for the walk because according to that index it said was still safe enough to be outside but yeah idk it was still a little hazy

I’m from the Lehigh Valley (Eastern PA) - I’ve been watching your channel forever now and I had no clue you were from my neck of the woods! Always assumed you were in Philly I guess…

Tuesday we were told not to go outside, the air quality was unhealthy 214.
I will tell you, we live near Lake Huron and we have been here and in Michigan 58 years (with forest fires) and we have never smelled the chemical smell in the air that we are experiencing now. Pain and numb throat and tongue. It seems Canada will let the fire to continue burning all summer? Will they let us go put their fires out? I think like 98% of canadians live at the most southern regions of Canada. How is the Canadian population handling this?

In the next video, Luke will explain the air quality in Latin. Tune in. 😎
