Why NY Car Insurance is so Expensive

There are many reasons why New York City car insurance is so expensive but the primary one is the no fault insurance system. New York State operates under a no-fault insurance system, which requires drivers to carry Personal Injury Protection (PIP) coverage. This system can lead to higher insurance costs since it provides coverage for medical expenses and lost wages regardless of who is at fault in an accident.

I moved from the Bronx to Orange County, NY and put all the money I saved toward mortgage payments on a house.

your quote was 3 years ago. in 2023, as a new driver, i am quoted over $2000 a MONTH for a 2017 honda civic. on top of the high gas prices, parking prices, congestion pricing, i decided to ask my friend in PA if i could use his address for insurance temporarily so i can register my car in that state. i am looking forward so much to leaving this city. its the worst place i ever lived, but also the only place where i made a good salary.

In parts of Canada you can pay way over 300$ a month. Our healthcare is public, so no fault rules don't even need to exist. It's just insurance companies pushing to see how far they can go before people switch to cheaper companies

Ok but insurance is super cheap upstate and they’re subject to the no fault laws too. You might only pay $300 a year in Syracuse to insure the same car that you pay $9K a year in Brooklyn. Of course, there are less cars to collide into and upstate cities are excellent at snow removal (they have to be or nothing would ever get done).

Im 28, I've been driving with a license for 6 years. I tried changing my auto insurance to something better. I've been using an insurance company that charges me by the mile. So I wanted something that was one price all the time. Charging by the mile discourages me from taking long drives, so it was a hassle. I looked at Statefarm, All-State, Farmers Insurance, Geico, and a few companies that weren't too popular in the insurance area, just to check as many quotes as possible. The best one I found was Geico, who quoted me $289/month for thr most basic coverage. Every other insurance company quoted me between $600-900/month. And no im not kidding. Why is that?? I've only had 1 minor accident during the time I've been a licensed driver in California. And it was me backing into a tree at a 7eleven.

Who cares about risk? Should be when it does happen you get rates jacked up. That’s called profiling I’m going to charge black people a higher price on goods because they might steal it is the same principle

sadly that is America for you, ,just rip the people off every which way you can, ,in Europe car insurance is fairly priced with no extra add on, s, plus every driver earns a no claims bonus, ,so no claim then your insurance goes down every year . here you also get a green card with your insurance, that insures you in every country in europe, ,,
