If you want to train an archer, start with his grandfather.
If you want to train a musketman, start on Tuesday

Common theme: If a peasant can learn to use it in a few weeks time, it's automatically an OP weapon

I love how the ideology around flintlock weapons is basically "oh no it's a piece of shit, I'm not arguing that, BUT it's a very easy to use piece of shit"

Imagine a bow man hearing “we replaced you because you were to Irreplaceable”

A malnourished musketman is a musketman, a malnourished skilled archer is no longer an archer

So basically the 16 year protagonist with plot armor vs the 44 year old villian who trained for years.

This is why I love flintlock weapons. You have a weapon that is worse in almost every way than its predecessor, but through ease of use and enough men to use it, it completely changes the way that war is fought, and by extension, how history unfolds.

"any peasant with a few weeks of training can use a gun"

If I'm not wrong something similar happened with the crossbow before.
It was easier to train someone to use one and they had so much power that even the church tried to outlaw them to some point.

Another often overlooked reason firearms replaced bows and arrows is that musket balls and powder are easier to mass produce and transport than arrows. Guns and ammo also didn't need to be sized to each users height and strength like a bow and arrows. With a bow the draw weight and length has to be specific to the archer and the arrows have to have the correct stiffness for the draw weight and the right length for the draw length. With guns you can issue the same weapon to every single soldier and those weapons will all use the same ammo.

We can sometimes tell when an ancient skeleton belonged to an archer the years of drawing the bow back would deform some of their bones.

There's also the musket's secondary function. If it runs out of bullets or the enemy get close enough for swords to be viable, the bayonets would allow a line of musketmen to switch over to spear tactics.

How do you train a longbowman? You start with his father.

Ok, now lets see a professionally trained musketeer go up against two kids with glocks

I feel like the machinegun and, to a slightly lesser extent, the self contained catridge had a similar impact. No longer did you have lines of troops volley fire into eachother. Individual troops now had the same volume of fire as their predecessors entire company.
