"Valery, what's that?

A smile?"

:))

This clip is taken from 2019 HBO miniseries, Chernobyl. I do not own any of the footage and all credit goes to HBO and their talented team.

My favorite scene, the smile and the hugh. Almost made me cry

Imagine how they went from potential adversaries in the second episode to bash brothers. It honestly melts your heart, especially since you already know how the show will end.

The chemistry between those two was really good. They went from being almost enemies to really close friends over this, and it was really great to watch. It's a shame it ended the way it did.

The first time I watched this, when he said, "Valery, what's that?" I thought, "What now? Aliens?"

Boris - a main character who starts as a rude and annoying neysayer, but develops into a full fledged hero. And at the right pace! It works perfectly! Other shows need whole seasons for this. I bow to the makers of this series!

"I know not that one." That exchange between Valery and Boris reminds me of feeling bad and condescending every time I overexplain a piece of normal science that everyone knows. Like if someone asks me about eclipses and I start by saying "The moon goes around the earth, " and receive a well-deserved eyeroll for my troubles, like "Yes, nerd, I actually did pay that much attention in middle school." It's such a well written scene. That bit of tension between Valery and Boris brings us right back to the moment when Shcherbina was ready to throw Legasov out of the helicopter in "Please Remain Calm". The scene ends with Boris going out of his way to validate and encourage his now true comrade by needling Valery about his smile, and then embracing him with true love. Props to Craig Mazin for writing it all that way, and for the actors, director, and crew for delivering it to us. The artistry of the series moved me to tears as much as the events depicted.

It's in our nature to want good for each other...that's how you know you're human.

After everything these guys endured and all the weight on their shoulders, even a moment to smile must've felt like such a relief.

Their bromantic chemistry was adorable even more so in real life between Stellan and Jared

"Tell me how a nuclear reactor works or I'll have these soldiers throw you out of the helicopter"

I don't like this guy. :/

"Valery, what's that? A smile?" *Laughs and hugs*

I like this guy! 😆

Almost enemies - frenemies - friends. Loved that sequence.
No happy end though.
Not in this damned world.
