3 Things You Want To Know In All Keys And Positions

When you play jazz you are improvising over chord progressions that move through different scales. And you need scale positions that you can connect and have an overview off in a way that makes it easy to improvise solos.

In this video, I am going to go over a basic way to practice and test your fretboard knowledge by taking progressions and use them to work on scale positions on the guitar neck. This will help you memorize the right information in the right context for when you want to improvise solos and will help you become freer when you play.

Fantastic info as always! Once I was able to identify the diatonic chords in each position, I started adding stuff like the b5 or b3 chord. The next level was to take a song like Green Dolphin street and learn it all keys. The end section covers a lot of ground (II, VII III(7), VI, bV VII(7), III VI II V. I wasn't until I did this with tunes that I really saw the patterns and understood the functionality of the chords. I've done this with Night and Day, How High The Moon, Green Dolphin, Just Friends and Days of Wine and Roses. A lot of work, but my playing got to another level. Love your videos and the hard work, thought and consideration you put into it!!

Another great one, Jens. The basics logically presented (as always) so one can do something musical with them. Thanks!

Really enjoyable and interesting content! If you could slow down just a bit in the talk and introduction of new things sections it'd help a lot! These coming as new things makes it a bit difficult to understand before it's already in the past and then you start getting behind while the brain is still processing the last bit! Thanks for the lesson!

Outstanding video tutorial. Randy Vincent's book "Three-Note Voicings and Beyond" have proven helpful to me in my guitar work as well my keyboard and saxophone work.

I notice that in most of your videos that have II V I you only play inside on IM7, are there any videos that you have more possibilities about this chord? thanks

Hello, thanks for the video, very enjoyed it :)
I have one question, here 2:29 in first bar(Am7) you used F# twice which is not included into Am scale. How does it work? :)
