Today Meta announced Orion, their first true augmented reality (AR) glasses prototype, which CEO Mark Zuckerberg has hailed as "the most advanced glasses the world has ever seen." These glasses are notably smaller than Snap’s AR prototype, Spectacles 5, and use tiny projectors in the temples to display digital content. In development for over a decade, Orion can be controlled through eye tracking, hand gestures, or a first of it’s kind neural interface via a wrist strap device and has the largest field of view in any AR glasses of this size to date.

Orion is designed for a wide range of uses, including multitasking, watching big-screen entertainment, and viewing life-size holograms. Meta has integrated enhancements in 'passthrough' technology, enabling users to interact with the digital world while staying present in their physical surroundings. The interface borrows elements from Apple's VisionOS, and the glasses could eventually replace smartphones as they evolve. While these advanced features are still only available for developers, Orion is expected to revolutionize how people interact with digital and physical spaces.

Meta has not yet released specific details on pricing or a consumer release date, but Orion’s goal is clear: to seamlessly blend digital content with the physical world. Designed for comfort and high functionality, these glasses are positioned as a potential game-changer in AR technology, providing a glimpse into the future of wearable tech.
