Chinese carmaker BYD sold more fully electric cars worldwide than Tesla during the final months of 2024. So could 2024 be the year when Chinese EV's break through in Western markets? With the help of Peter Fintl from Capgemini Engineering, we discuss Washington and Brussels' attempts to protect their own auto industries and ask how traditional carmakers have been left behind.

Subsidies in China EVs applies to both domestic and foreign brands just to be clear. US subsidies only applies to US Brands

All brands of EV cars get subsidies in China, BYD, Tesla or VW. Last summer I visited China and surprised to see the price tag of VW ID3 of 125.9K Chinese Yuan, which is cheaper than the cheapest VW Jetta here in Canada. People can find out the truth of government subsidies if they do some research or simply walk into a store in China and talk with a sales guy, but unfortunately these “experts”cannot.

Here in Brazil, sales of hybrid and mainly 100% electric cars exploded in 2023 due to the aggressive prices adopted by the Chinese BYD and GWM, forcing a drop in the prices of all traditional Western brands (American, European, Japanese and Korean) that were asking a lot for electric cars focused only on high-income consumers, they received a big kick in the butt from Chinese companies and are now lobbying the government to tax imported cars. but it will be in vain, because BYD, GWM and other Chinese brands are already setting up factories in Brazil, a country with a sunny climate all year round and an energy matrix from wind and solar plants that is experiencing strong growth

The host is trying desperately to play up the China threat, while the guest is refusing to take the bait and is objectively analysing the situation instead. Good for him!

Exactly how is the Chinese government "unfairly" subsidizing EV makers? I haven't heard anything specific from the politicians.

There was no subsidies that were not also available to foreign makers. Tesla buyers in China got the exact same subsidies as domestic makers buyers. In fact, Tesla got a much better deal than domestic players for setting up gigafactory in Shanghai. Super cheap land, Electricity etc. Chinese govt bent over backwards to facilitate Tesla's entry into China.

There's a lot of discussion about BYD producing and selling more than Tesla. But Tesla is not the company under fire here. It's GM, Ford, Volkswagen, Toyota, etc. All legacy car companies that can't keep up with BYD or Tesla. For Tesla nothing has changed, they just keep growing and expanding at their own speed.

When the Chinese government invests in the future of their country it's called a subsidy. I really don't understand western thinking. The US Inflation Reduction Act is either, investment or subsidisation, of the US EV industry - but it is only ever referred to investment by western media. Same thing for Europe - EU subsidies are only ever called investments. Hypocrisy seems to have become a Hallmark of the West.

Some Western car manufacturers still haven't stopped shooting themselves in the foot lobbying against EVs. They shouldn't be surprised the environment is better in China where that doesn't happen.

The cheapest BYD is around 30k euro, while Tesla is around 44k euro. It would be interesting to see when Tesla released the next gen car that would be cheaper.
