Who’s ready for an EV drag race?!

We’ve got our hands on the Tesla Model 3 Long Range, and it’s facing off against one of the newest small electric cars around - the BYD Seal!

So let’s see whether this all-new Chinese EV can take down the Tesla. Under the skin, you’ll find two electric motors that provide 530hp and 670Nm of torque. Power is sent to all four wheels, and it tips the scales at 2,055kg. If you were looking to pick one up, it’d set you back around £48,000.

Then we come to the Tesla. It also comes with dual electric motors, and these should provide you with 490hp and 490Nm of torque. This power is sent to all four wheels, and it’s a fair bit lighter than the BYD, weighing in at 1,840kg. It’s slightly more expensive, though, costing around £50,000.

So can the new kid on the block snatch it? Or will the Tesla reign supreme? There’s only one way to find out… LET’S RACE!

Thing about EV drag races is, you don't feel guilty for speeding the video up. You don't loose any exhaust noise.

This feels like watching a submarine race. So calm and quiet

In Brazil the BYD Seal costs half price of the Tesla. Not comparable. BYD is the best

Can we have another test for "Driving EVs Across UK until They Die" challenge, but this time with Sam, Matt and Yianni. The banter is just marvellous between these fellas.

The Seal dual motor has a weight of about 2, 185kg, not 2, 055kg. The lower weight is the single motor.

The BYD does seem like a much nicer car to be in. It just doesn't look as bland inside and out.

The Seal in Australia is an absolute bargain and much cheaper than it is sold in the UK. I would buy one except for the fact its a sedan and I only ever buy hatchbacks. The Seal is much easier to get in and out of for an older person compared to the Model 3 but I miss the ease of entry/exit of my Model Y I had until recently. It was destroyed in an accident. I have a BYD Atto 3 and whilst smaller than the Tesla MY, is an incredible vehicle with a very impressive ride. Both of these vehicles have their merits and enjoyed both Matt and Sam having fun.

I'll be honest ... there's something comforting in Sam that makes me feel ... safe. He has this dad-vibe and if I could meet a single person from the carwow team - 10/10 would love to meet him. Seems like such a chill and nice guy to have a beer with and just talk about life.

Both batteries are made from BYD, i Think... the only matter is the motor used

There’s a big A button on the BYD centre console, Auto Hold which stops the car moving forward

I have to say, Sam is such a fantastic addition to the shows. Love the timing for his comedy.

I keep seeing these BYD Seals in shopping malls (In Thailand) and they look / feel really nice inside... I can't afford one but i might see if i can blag a test drive at some point...

The BYD is heavier because it has a larger battery pack...
So the range of the BYD is way larger, but due to the larger weight it will have lower acceleration.

It's shameful that they didn't know that Seal limited the maximum speed to protect battery life and safety, even though the batteries used in these two cars were the same BYD blade batteries

It’s very shameful for two English Car enthusiasts to forget the Jaguar 🐆😂

You can keep the BYD stationary without the brake pedal by engaging the auto hold function via a centre console button.

Good to see more competition between Tesla and BYD

If I had to buy an EV, I’d probably go for a byd just because their blade batteries are puncture proof (wouldn’t catch fire after getting punctured like normal batteries do)
