maybe this was too ambitious for a first project | Claude Tries New Things Ep1

Claude Tries New Things is here! This time I'm delving into the world of embroidery. Now if I'm honest I have done some embroidery before, but not for a very long time and never on my own. So while I kind of know what I'm doing, I have no idea if I'm capable of designing and making something that I'll actually be able to give my friends as a gift. Hopefully it'll work out okay at the end.

I love the idea of commemorating all the anniversaries they had together before their marriage! It came out so cute and is such a nice and personal gift for their special day! Embroidery I find is so freeform you end up employing the "I'm the artist and I say it's what I intended" liberty quite often and that's perfectly acceptable! 😅

Oh the goddesses…I was that little old lady! I was about 40/42 when I taught the 4/5’s how to take measurements, sew on buttons, use both vintage and modern machines…finale being an apron each for the kids’ pizza making adventures. I was ‘the little old lady’. 😂 🌈🌈🦋🦋 They loved down to a child. Me and a couple of other moms taught the same kids, in 3, how to knit. Many of the kiddos continued both knitting and sewing. I ran into a parent, 15 years later, and she remembered me teaching her so to sew. A very thoughtful gift. ❤

Our house is surrounded by retired men who thrive on having perfectly mown lawns. I swear that there is someone doing yardwork every single day in the summer. Our direct next door neighbor has a postage stamp yard, the same size as ours and he has two separate mowers: a push for the front and a ride on for the back. Lawn culture is absolutely wilding here in America.

I can totally relate to not having motivation for working on things that are not practical! I guess that's probably why im into knitting and sewing so much. They can make very practical things but also allow you to be creative ✨

I'm glad it turned out well, and that you enjoyed it. I rather like making gifts for people when I can manage it. The little sheep friend is very cute.

This is a great gift, it commemorate not only their wedding but their whole life together up to this point. One more year and it could have been made into a clock

This was so fun to watch, embroidery was what got me into fibre arts more broadly and it's such a nice craft to make presents for poeple. I recently made an embroidered gift for my cousins baby that had the national bird of every country she had family in, four birds total. In the center I put "(baby name) you are loved from all over the world."

I think this is a lovely, sweet wedding present. It's a shame they didnt postpone their marriage for one more year, or else this could have been a "practical" embroidered clock! I craft for the finished product, so I also struggle with decorative crafts because I can't find the motivation to finish by imagining the added function to my life. I am trying to learn some more embroidery skills, and my plan is to make a wifi QR code because I crave usefulness.

Thats awesome...I love the 11 years of anniversaries idea, thats truely innovative. My nan taught me embroidery and X stitch and all my life - even as a 40 yr old, when ever I showed her something, she would take it and immediately turn it over to the back!! Mind you - the reverse of of hher embroidery was just as good as the right side of it. WOW! My bridesmaid did me an embrodered pillow for our rings, and our wedding date was also our 3rd anniv - so it was an important date. I still have it 33 years later. I use it to throw at him when hes being a tosser! LOL

I'd cry with happiness if someone made a gift this thoughtful for me and mine. You've done a lovely job of it.

I love art...and pretty things...but I too prefer to create things that are also useful. Which is probably why I love knitting and quilting because when you are done you have something you can use that is also beautiful ❤

if you like embroidery, and would like it to be practical, maybe check out sashiko? it's a type of Japanese embroidery, very geometric, but it's used to reinforce cloth. like for wash/dust cloths to last longer, but there's some nice tutorials about using it for visible mending and reinforcing seams on things like jeans or jackets
I think having a little embroidery with all the traditional anniversary gifts is really sweet! definitely stressful for you with being a wedding present, but an incredibly sweet present
edit- also, I've seen people suggesting using Crayola washable markers. they're very cheap (compared to water soluble gifts), non-toxic, and wash out really easily since they're meant for kids.

The four digit numbers are DMC from France. Congrats. Embroidery is a favorite of mine. I’m just now at almost 67 learning to knit. Love watching your channel and your journey. I have a chronic condition and have to work around it to do what I love.

What a lovely original gift. As you say, it's not perfect, but the beauty of hand made things is the imperfections. I'm sure your friends will treasure it. I would

embroidery is such a good hobby for variable energy levels, you can pick it up whenever and put it down just as easily, it's so self contained (I feel like most crafts have some level of set up required but embroidery not really!)

Those pens will go away with heat, and the markings don't come back. You can steam them with an iron or use a hair dryer, for example. Anyways, your gift turned out great!

My son in law made a little embroidered pillow for my daughter for their wedding, without her knowing. He presented it to her at the rehearsal dinner. All the moms there fell in love with him!
