Do We Still Need The EU?

Is it time to leave the EU behind as it is? Was it all just a mistake? Or are we completely insanely stupid and we're just questioning the fundamental foundation of everything good we have left from the 20th century?

Yes, yes we do.

Outro song: Kevin MacLeod - The Britons

The EU resulted in the most peaceful era on the European continent in its entire history.

It's an incredible success story.

About the EU, while I agree, the EU definitely is a good thing. It does unfortunately get effected by the usual issues effecting politics. Like corporate lobbying (literally the building for corporate lobbying is in walking distance from the European parliament). Basically legal bribery. Stacked with poor political education and understanding by the general masses (with right wing propaganda being spread freely, in recent years) resulting in social regression and capitalist (and I can't stress this enough) DREAMS of "a better economic past" of the more economically larger EU countries. And it results in a self destructive individualization narrative, supported by corporate and political greed, slowly but surely eroding the Union from inside. Of course, smaller countries hold responsibility too, I can't speak for all but for Bulgaria, both the extremely corrupt government and extremely poorly politically educated masses (with some help from the right wing narrative that blew up recently aka Red Pill bullshit) results in 20% of the population voting. No unionization and subsequently a minimum wage of roughly €2.5 per hour. In my opinion, people have just gotten too comfortable being dumb, being ignorant. And both politics and corporations take advantage of that. As for where that would lead us, likely nowhere good.

I don't get why anyone would despise the European Union tbh.

Aside from the peace it brought, we might need the EU more than ever if the US ever leaves NATO... :/

And it TRIES to prevent member states to go absolutely bonkers on their national budget so future generations still have some benefit of all this cooperation, right (looking at you, my beloved waffle land)

Now yeah I understand your point, but speaking as someone from a small country, we have very little to no say in what the EU demands, and what little say we do have is too limited to call it that, and the decisions that benefit the large powerhouses of europe are generally bad for us. For example, when the value of the euro started plummitting, it was the small countries with relatively weak output that suffered the most.

I also generally dislike the fact that decisions about my country's internal laws are made somewhere thousands of kilometres away from my country, by a parliament that has 705 members, but of which my country has 14 representatives, but that's just my opinion

Economic ties through trade didn't stop Germany from being apart of ww1 and ww2 despite people at the time believe that it would be far too costly for them to go to war
