The National Association of Head Teachers says more than half of schools say they’ll go into deficit this academic year and nine out of 10 schools in England are expecting to have run out of money by the next school year.

Separate research from survey app Teacher Tapp found that more than a quarter of London schools can no longer afford to provide catch-up learning — despite growing educational gaps caused by the pandemic.

Evening Standard Feature Writer, Katie Strick, takes a deep dive into the funding crisis hitting UK schools and the impact in real terms.

for latest breaking news from the UK, US and around the world, plus podcasts and features.

Unexpectedly, reading this article brought tears to my eyes. I left the Royal Navy in 2009 after nearly 30 years of service and had been at one time or other its principal advisor for all learning (individual, team and whole ship education and training), leadership and management. My last 6 years were in NATO as part of its battlestaff. After retiring, I wanted to ‘give back’ to our young people and spent 13 years teaching the most critical subjects in the Engineering, Aerospace and Automotive disciplines up to second year degree level. However, I found the leadership was self-satisfied and complacent to the obvious failings of the current education system, particularly in meeting the STEM needs of industry, and was highly resistant to any significant changes. Last year I was told that Exeter College was due an OFSTED inspection so I had to resign as I knew my integrity would compel me to tell the supposed educational leadership of this country, and, OFSTED, exactly what I thought of their leadership, knowing that the college would be downgraded by a single word - ‘Inadequate’ - if I did so. Since then, of course, there have been tragic consequences around this issue, and I doubt whether I will ever be asked back into the system to teach again.

Create local homeschool co ops run by volunteers and parents. No ipads no phones. Books, paper and pens and a good library. 100 years ago community schools raised smarter, more responsible kids who were expected to behave. The government does not care about your kids. This is a societal problem not lack of funding.

Lets spend grands on computers then sack a load of teachers cos we spent all thd cash on tech, so now we got a load of overpriced pcs that nobody has been taught how tk build or use cos no teachers left, when treemans would make every pupil build their own sbc pc for under £20 using chipboards solder and a fsw resistors

Formal education of basic education and college education must not be impaired by the state lack of funds. Educational institution must stand to be the leading example of entrepreneurship making its operation a self revenue earning school e.g. build a canteen concessionaire, a convenience store, office and school supplies, public and students“ computer shop and copying machine, telephone and telefax services. A one stop shop for all for the safety and convenience of the students and public consumers. -Oraculum

All industries have budgets. If i cant do my job with the budget i get i would be politely ask to leave. I would also be expecting to hand 10% back. The problem is headteachers cant run the schools teachers are not as well educated anymore and salaries are to high. Lets start reducing salaries. Putting teachers on performance related pay .hiring heads that are business educated and see what happens

Sorry but at my children’s school they have one main teacher in the classroom and 3 “ Assistants “ in the same room.
Scrap the extra assistants and save way more money.

Sorry to throw a spanner in your doom and gloom reduncy scares, and I quote "The ONLY way to make REAL savings is redundancies"

There is NO other way at all..Hmmm I beg to differ, in fact I would hire a few extra design and technology tutors because we would need them for my new sceme called "My SBC" in which schools dont buy computers a, ymore they build their own single board custom PC's in technology and populate the whole school with the PC's required by everyone from the headmaster to the wages clerks right through to the students doing gcse bussiness all pcs are soldered with love and each one works as it should because if it doesnt then it is just time to identify why not and ivercome hurdles until it is ready to go
