Here's a beginner yin yoga class for full body flexibility that doesn't require props.

Hey yogis, I got a great request recently to put together a yin yoga class that wouldn't utilize any props. As you most likely know, yin yoga tends to be quite prop intensive using blocks, straps, bolsters, blankets and many other items that you might not always have around.

If you're travelling or just low on props, this yin yoga class will take you through a 40 minute sequence you can do without equipment! Of course, I'm a big lover of props so always recommend having them close by, but this is a nice class to do in a pinch :)

What is Yin Yoga? Yin yoga is often called the Yoga of the joints because unlike other styles of yoga, the emphasis is not on the muscles but on the deep connective tissue. Connective tissue is made up of fascia, ligaments and tendons which surround and form your joints. Yin yoga improves the range of motion in your joints and also strengthens them. The results and benefits are more flexibility and greater range of motion and also more stability within your joints.

There are 3 principles of Yin Yoga.
1. Find your edge
2. Be still
3. Hold the pose

Find your edge means respecting your body's limits and not pushing too far and risking injury. Pull back a little bit and as you hold the pose you will be able to go deeper into it without pushing too far or hurting yourself.

Being still means that once you are in the pose it is important to completely relax your muscles so the benefits can get into the connective tissues and joints. Try not to fidget or move or distract yourself, this is a meditative practice. Breathe deeply in and out through the nose.

Holding the pose means that in Yin Yoga a pose can be held for 1-10 minutes depending on the pose performed and on the comfort level of the student.

I don't even know where to begin. I'm a 61 year old fat woman and a year ago I couldn't even approach child's pose without crying. Kneeling and sitting back on the heels has been painful for me my entire life, even when I was a skinny kid. Now, I can get into the child's pose and hold it for the allotted time. I even did a modified version of the toe squats, just being upright on my knees, but my toes were tucked under the entire time, stretching out and I held reverse prayer as well!! This is so much progress for me, I can't even express it. Since I discovered your yin yoga channel and joined your FB group, my practice has really come alive! Thank you so much for your continued dedication to bring us great classes and educate us in the beauty of yin! Blessed be!

Thank you, Kassandra. I have a lot of injuries sustained during my time in the military and from playing contact sports. For years now, I have limited myself to only doing weights in the gym because I can alter my workouts to cater for my injuries. However, this has caused my body to become so inflexible that it has added to my chronic pain, and I can hardly even do the beginner yoga poses. Your classes are helping me to undo some of this accumulative damage. I am grateful that you share your knowledge to help people like myself. Namaste.

This sequence somehow relieved a pinched nerve in my shoulder that I’ve had for over three months. I’ve done other yoga practices before but somehow this did the trick! Thank you so much for making this.

Oh this was just what I needed. My back and hips hurt from being overweight and spending most of my time sitting, this was perfect. I'll definitely do more of these, I've enjoyed your other videos, very helpful as I get back into the practice after years away.

Thank you for this. The toe squats weren't happening for me, but everything else felt great, if not a little painful at first. My back has been so tense and sore that the reclined pigeon and twist were the perfect answer.

I began this class about 2 months ago after the suggestion of my doctor because my leg (from the knee to the hips) was hurting me. I'm doing that class every days and I can really see the improvement now, I'm not stretching as much as you but I do my best, thank you very much!

I came here with a recovering frozen shoulder and neck pain. Traumas, posture etc. Today my foot toe is also aching😅 i am 50 and this rainy day is perfect for your practice. I was doing yoga to release tension but i felt stuck coz of shoulder pain. I thought yoga was not for me anymore😢 will keep on discovering your channel Thank you.

i have been meditating for 20mins every morning for almost a year now, but i am inflexible and have been tossing around the idea of doing yoga instead as it’s meditative aswell. I am terribly tight in places i didn’t even realise, this was tricky for me especially at the beginning but by the end i felt peace and that this will be a good set to start some progress. i’ll be doing this every morning for the next two weeks, it’s winter so wish me luck!

This was amazing, it was my first time with Yin yoga and it's absolutely my thing, I love the stretch and relaxion, even though I had to skip those toe squats, my toes just couldn't handle it. I wish I had props to do all the other practices!
The music was lovely.

My wife and I have practised for years, but lockdown in the UK gave us the chance to practise three or four times a week. Now that lockdown has gone (at least for now!) we have continued to practise your Yin Toga classes and LOVE them. Thank you so much.
