Best Time to Use a Dual-Band Filter?

If you have a color camera and dual-band narrowband filter, like the Optolong L-Enhance, you might be wondering when to use this filter. Should it be used when photographing galaxies or reflection nebulae? Should you use it only in light polluted areas? Does it have any benefit when photographing from a dark sky?

In this video we'll take a look at some comparison images to determine how effective a dual-band filter is from a dark sky. The results may be surprising...

And with the development of the DBextract process in PI the game has changed just a bit for us OSC imagers. The ability to shoot dual band filters (Ha/O3 and S2/O3) and then extract mono images of Ha, 03 and S2 is amazing. Granted they don't have the same level of detail and data of the natively shot mono versions but I find them a wonderful compromise.

Wish this Optolong company would make these filters for other brands of cameras like Nikon.

Thanks for the video, filters are difficult to work with because their so over priced, and you just want to get that perfect one.

Interesting but at the end it looks like with a filter you show the same subject but in a different light... Without massing in PP with colour balance.
How that look in monochrome? It good be more interesting view cause it will not highlight so much in colourcast but on details in nebula.

Filtered version is clearly more stretched so no wonder you can see more :(
