As music producers we are ALWAYS trying to get that kick sitting right.. We always want to use compression to make our kicks smack, but check out this trick to make a kick drum punch harder without using a compressor!

IMPORTANT:
I accidentally said 'attenuate the punchiness' but I meant ACCENTUATE the punchiness.
Just a small mistake that may be confusing, but I think the rest of video clears this up but just wanted to make sure no one was left confused :)

Ever since I used kick sculpting plugins, I do this using sine waves, dynamically age perfectly sculpted.

or use audacity so you can draw in the curve exactly, and do more complex volume adjustments

Optical said it best. Compressing sampled drums just makes them spikey. When sampling you gotta have a quality source. Another reason why hardware is better however this is also good advice outside of the software realm.

Gonna do this on each individual kick for a track??? Come on now. REAL engineers don’t have time for that! 😂 We too busy hitting deadlines and dealing with revisions to take such a long-ass approach to punchy kicks. There’s a reason too engineers don’t faff around like this. And there’s a reason punchy kicks can and have been obtained for decades through much more efficient and conventional means - selling huge amounts of recordings in the process.
