Whether using fingers when calculating, number line tasks on a dance mat or counting games on the multi touch table – all these methods aid children in experiencing numerical concepts physically. Current research suggests that children can benefit from this so-called "embodiment" and thus learn better.

The danger with finger counting is that the child will always count by one to add and subtract. This will make it harder for the student to transition to abstract numerals. I think that finger counting is still much better than something called touch math where dots are welded onto the abstract numerals. In my opinion the touch math is the worst thing you could ever teach a child and would recommend finger counting over the touch math. I know this because I am the worlds leading expert on teaching math with dots. Dice dots that are NOT welded onto the numeral is a better way to teach math in my opinion.
