Mt. Success, New Hampshire – November 30, 1954

On November 30, 1954, Northeast Airlines Flight 792 departed from Boston’s Logan Airport bound for Berlin, New Hampshire, with stops at Concord and Laconia, New Hampshire. The aircraft was a DC-3, (registration N17891).

Just after 11:00 a.m. the flight contacted the air traffic controller at Berlin Airport and requested weather information. The crew was advised that the weather was 3,000 feet overcast, with 2.5 mile visibility, and light snow showers.

As the plane was making a wide circle in preparation for landing it suddenly encountered turbulent weather and a severe downdraft, which caused it to loose 500 feet of altitude and crash into the summit of Mt. Success. Although the plane suffered heavy damage, the fuselage remained largely intact.

There were seven people aboard; three passengers and a crew of four. Two of the crew, the co-pilot, George McCormick, 37, and flight superintendent John McNulty, 39, both of Boston, were unconscious and died of injuries about two hours later. The pilot, Peter Carey, 37, was seriously injured. The three passengers, James W. Harvey, William Miller, and Daniel Hall, as well as the flight attendant, Mary McEttrick, 23, each suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

The aircraft’s left engine was discovered to be burning, and for the next two hours the passengers carried snow on food trays to douse the flames.

At 11:28 a.m. the air traffic controller in Berlin tried to contact Flight 792 and received no reply. A search and rescue operation was initiated, but deteriorating weather conditions hampered efforts.

The crash site was at 3,440 feet, and it was initially concealed by low cloud cover that extended down to 2,500 feet, and therefore wasn’t spotted from the air until December 2nd.

For 45 hours the survivors battled cold and hunger. The pilot, although seriously injured, supervised survival measures. It was snowing, and the temperature dropped below freezing. Survivors wrapped themselves with anything available including cabin insulation, curtains, and soundproofing material to stay warm. The passengers opened their suitcases and distributed extra clothing to the crew.

There was nothing to eat but a few crackers, cookies, and tea. After collecting some wood, a small fire was built for warmth and to brew the tea. Miss McEttrick was credited by the passengers for keeping everyone’s spirits up while waiting for rescue, and they gave her the nickname, “Merry Mack”.

After the wreckage was seen from the air on December 2nd, an Air Force helicopter was dispatched to the site from Grenier Air Force Base in Manchester, New Hampshire, and lowered a doctor to treat the survivors. All were flown one at a time to Berlin Airport.

The wreckage of Flight 792 was left were it fell, and today is visited and photographed by hikers.

They say that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. What may seem an eyesore to one person, just might be a beautiful masterpiece to another. There are places beloved by communities and protected in the hearts of those that hold their memories of its tattered hallways and decayed rooms dear. This is the way that we feel when we explore places that have been forgotten by time. Left to rot and decay and only holding the silent whispers of what once was. We know that there are people out there with malicious intent toward these places that we venture into. It saddens us when we see the filth and destruction they leave behind, but we want to make something very clear… We are explorers and lovers of history. We in no way, shape or form condone the criminal activities that take place in the historical decaying places that we document. Social media has brought many of these places to the limelight, but the intention is to show the beauty and mystery of abandonment. Not to invite trouble. Trouble will find its way on its own and to say that the peaceful documentation of these places leads to criminal activity, is mind blowing. We have met so many amazing fellow explorers in our travels and are so thankful and humbled by the positive responses we have received. We know that this type of exploration is not for everyone…many people don’t understand why we find such beauty in decay, we can only explain it as a beautiful journey into the past. We invite you to watch our explores and come along as we visit these amazing places. As for the criminal activity that occurs, those individuals are responsible for their own actions. It is a terrible part of our society, but reality, nonetheless. Thank you for taking the time to read this and for loving this location just as much as we do. We hope that through this video, the memories held within will remain.

Thank you for hiking up Mount Success to this site, it is amazing to see. My aunt, Mary McEttrick was a 21 year old flight attendant and survived. Mary wrote on the wing of the plane with her lipstick, indicating the number of survivors, in the hopes of being spotted and rescued. She continued flying with Northeast after this crash, and at her retirement from Delta Airlines (merged with Northeast) she was the #3 in seniority. Mary passed away in 2015. Again, thank you!

Amazing anyone survived. Being a DC3, known for it's toughness in war, and seen others on YouTube, it does not surprise me. I think the the area of the plane you were in at the end of the video was the forward section. The nose probably took the brunt of the impact and destroyed . Thanks for sharing, great adventure!

A little explanation about the crash: They landed on the top of the trees what have "softed their fall", and since they were coming in slow for a jet because of the flaps they hadn't had a very hard impact. About all the debries, every aircraft, mainly the commercial ones, are made to break apart in 3 main blocks of survival so it can take most of the impact in order to protect the passengers. Great exploration, loved to see!

I'm truly blown away! First, the amazing long and exhausting hike, then the beautiful views, but then reaching the plane my heart just sank. I'm shocked that most survived honestly. God bless those crew members and passengers, and prayers to the 2 that didn't make it...may they have found peace. Thanks so much for this post guys! Bless!

Hi Jenn and Marcel! Kudos for making it up (and back down) to see this *FANTABULOUS* piece of history. I am *definately* sharing this with my kids and others! I loved Marcel's voice over in the beginning and such sweet music at the end to honor the deceased. May they rest in peace. ❤

Amazing explore, guys! I haven't done any hiking and/or mountain climbing in about 25 years. The last summit I visited was Mt. Major in Alton Bay, NH... and that mountain isn't very high; I think it's only about 1800 feet, LOL, so compared to Mt. Success, Mt. Major is basically just a "hill." Even still, some parts were pretty darn steep and I was so out of shape I almost threw up, LOL. There's NO WAY I'd attempt it nowadays, I'm way too old to even think about it... so I give y'all some MAJOR props for making it to that plane crash site!
There are some adventures/explores in life that are true "journeys" and this was one of them! Thanks for sharing this one!
Take care,
Valerie

So crazy story, I’m a resident of NH and have been to this site myself, I searched YouTube for historic plane crash sites, and this was the first video I came across, not knowing that it just so happened to take place in my state. I’m so glad you find our state as beautiful as I do. Thank you for your wonderful video of this historic site 💕

Very cool. Looks a bit strenuous for me, especially since my back started acting up. I couldn't do a one mile level walk right now, but hopefully in the future a bit. We just had to cancel a cruise because I wouldn't have been able to walk the ship just getting place to place day after day. I remember doing places like Mt Le Conte in the Smokies. Fun stuff. I envy you a bit, but I think I've probably got ten to fifteen years on you guys, so there's that. I could have done this easily ten years back.

My old man had a piece of mostly vertical property about 5 miles out of the park, between it and the Blue Ridge parkway in Townsend Tenn. that he was going to put a cabin on but never got that far. I remember going up parts of that ridge you literally couldn't get enough traction to stay without sliding down, kind of tree to tree stuff. Getting older sucks. We had a friend that had 64 acres down the road that had a goodly amount of 'flat' on it. I can't even imagine what that piece of property would be worth now. It was on Carr's Creek Road, for anyone that knows the area, and cares. Partially run down hillbilly with a few nice cabins/houses. At least it was then. Maybe nicer now.

The Appalachians up where you are don't look all that different, actually. The last time I was up to Clingman's dome I was really disheartened to see how bad the forest looked around it. They said it was acid rain, don't know if that was true. Hopefully it's better now, maybe worse though. That's a fairly short trail, fully maintained, that was very pretty view, from the observation platform.
