Today I will be demonstrating a technique that I discovered while using the Holbein Meltz Colored Pencil Blender. This solution makes it easy to turn regular colored pencils into a watercolor like consistency which makes it easy to do an under-painting for colored pencil drawings!

Shana, this is definitely something I will try out. I have Meltz but I hadn't thought of using it in this manner, you're a freaking genius! I read a review from a user that was really ticked off after using Meltz on something they colored with "wax" pencils. It does state on the bottle that it may not work with other brands of colored pencils. People should definitely test it out first on a separate piece of paper, before possibly causing them heartache if they don't like the result. Thanks for sharing this, it was very informative!

Thank you for showing how Meltz works with colored pencils. I have had the product for a while now but I haven't found too many people talking about how to use Meltz vs Colorless mineral spirits. There seems to be a question about what ingredients are in the Luminance pencils. On Passion for Pencils channel, Henny shows how the Luminance pencil works like a colorless blender and pigment. If that is the case then perhaps it is the reason why it may not work with the Meltz or mineral spirits. I like to use my Luminance pencils for the last layer to blend instead of using a colorless blender that removes the color. I am glad that you tried using the Koh-i-neer pencils with the Meltz as I have been having trouble finding a good match with a paper for those pencils. I may have to get those pencils out of the closet and try using them again. Very informative video !!!

That Caran D'ache pallet though!! I want one, lol 😆
I've never seen colored pencils used with a solvant quite like this before - I've always seen it applied directly to a colored-on page to smooth things out a bit but it is such a good idea mixing them on the side and then painting the color on like watercolor. So cool, and the pear turned out so luminous with all the layers!

I just ordered the Meltz since I do have a set of Lyra polycolor (oil based) color pencils. I also ordered the little palette! It will be great for my watercolor, Gouache, , Caran D Ache watercolor pencils, Caran D Ache watercolor crayons and water mixable oils. I have acrylic and regular oils too but hardly use them. Thanks so much for this video! I was not aware one could use the pencils this way!

This is a great idea that I have never seen! wow!!! this is amazing what you can do with this product!!! Shana, for some time, I had the idea of scratching some white pencil, either Prismacolors or Derwent Chinese white, and mixing the powder of that pencil with OMS to make it like a paint, and give details, either in whiskers or fur in artworks in colored pencils!!! and this product is incredible for this idea that I have! and your idea has given me the desire to experiment with both ideas!!! wow! definitely awesome!!! thank you, thank you, Thank

Well DANG! This stuff seems to be sold out everywhere! But then, I tend to use wax-based pencils so I'm not sure I'd be happy with it.

Holbein is a heavily wax based pencil I think the reason that you're having trouble with it with the other brands is because they use a different type and mixture of Wax versus oil

I get a lot of pain in my hands so anything that reduces having to layer pencil is interesting. If I can get it in UK I'll try this. How do you clean off the palette after use?

I use lavender oil instead of odorless mineral spirits to thin my paints and dissolve my pencils. It's a good alternative to using toxic thinners, IMO. It is a bit more expensive, though.

Instead of oms can you get zest it? I havnt tried it myself but I know some who use it instead of oms. Supposed to be a safer alternative to oms. Another thing maybe could be one of those natural brush cleaners? Not sure what's available in the US anymore.
