What are the BEST DAWs for the Steam Deck? (while traveling)

Albeton, Reaper, fruity loops, so many DAWs to choose from. But which ones actually work and are fun to use in handheld mode?

Dude, the screen isn't too small, just scale down your fingers

i have an actual M8, but I also use it headless with a Steam Deck. I just use electrical tape to tape the teensy to the back of the deck, then use a 6 inch USBC to USB micro cable I found on Amazon to plug it in. Has worked great for over a year without having to even change the tape.

I use ableton on a windows micro sd. I saved it as a non steam game with a custom controller map for almost every ableton input. Only thing its missing is a playable instrument. For that i usually just use touchosc on my phone for wireless midi. A launchpad mini or korg mini keyboard would be a great solution to this as well. Compact music setups have been my focus for almost two years now and so far this has been the most enjoyable experience and the closest to my normal workflow with mouse and keyboard. It takes getting used to but once you have a layout you’re comfortable with you can create just as fast and accurately as you would in a studio. If anyone wants to try this and needs help getting it set up let me know!

Im thinking of running headless m8 on my steam deck too, was it difficult to get it going or did it work fine from the install instructions?

How does the steam deck handle an external usb audio interface? Curious if connecting a focusrite to the usb hub works with a midi controller or if it’s not worth the delay

Very informative! Have you tried pairing it with an audio interface to record external instruments? I'm very interested to know if that would work, and what's the latency like, how many channels it could support, etc. I've been toying around in my head with the idea of a fully portable multi-track recording station, and a Steam Deck with a 6 or 8 inputs interface sounds really good on paper.

Excited to try Bitwig on my Deck with a C hub, monitor, and Maschine+! See it's not a toy, I do need to get the OLED model 🤣

If you add Bitwig as a non-Steam game in desktop mode you can use it in gaming mode and regain a bit more vertical real estate. There are a few community controller layouts to check out. Thanks for the DAW breakdowns Adam. Cheers mate!

I like this new content style, Adam! Very high production value, too. I think you're gonna blow up... again, soon!

Hey dude! Thanks for this vid, very informative and very smooth in general. I have been dying to get a steam deck but I also love the freaking M8 tracker. I was mind blown knowing that you can get it on steam deck!! So, my question is so far how is it going with that M8 for steam deck? Would you suggest it? I am thinking I should just do what you did and get the steam deck instead of the M8.

My brother made a song on his phone lol so 7 inch screen, absolutely killer! :) I don't know about bitwig... But Ableton is possible to scale up or down the screen. Which is super helpful! Once my brother buys me my own steam deck :)

Yo, I have a real M8, but sometimes my eyes are sore from the small screen.
Are you running M8 in the browser?
Is it stable? Because I tried running it on an Anbernic device (which I loved) but it was fiddly and unstable.

I mean, is it worth buying a SteamDeck for it? It would be cheaper then the M8 v2 (which with shipping & VAT is way too much)
