Been using Cakewalk for midi since back before computers were fast enough for audio without latency. Then computers got really fast and I moved up to a great computer and used it for everything. I have loved it. I have a Yamaha DM2000 board with 48 channels in and out via 2 Hammerfall 24 ch interfaces. Fantastic. If it ain't broke, I'm not about to try to fix it lol! But for those just starting out, you don't really need a big board unless you are going to be recording a band. If you multi track all the tracks, you can get buy with a stereo interface and use the built in mixer in Cakewalk. It works great, even with a mouse. But I admit, I love my dedicated board. I Just like putting my hands on sliders and knobs.

I have been a Cakewalk user for quite a number of years (going on 20 I think), and one thing that often gets overlooked about it is that it is also good for scoring to video media as well.

My main Daws are Reaper and Bitwig (and also Reason Rack), but I use Waveform (Pro) regularly. I feel like this great DAW is very underrated. Hopefully they get more Tracktion 😋😉

Zane, you helped me with many decisions regarding music production and equipment etc, so I thought your new video deserved a comment! I started a few years ago with Cakewalk, but couldn't get on with it. Then I tried MPC Beats as it came free with a MIDI keyboard I bought. I've since used Abelton LIVE and now switch between the two.

"TAKES TIME to LEARN..." THANK YOU... THAt is a much needed statement...
So many young people think they will have a quik easy time of it all.. So much of the basics in acoustics, mic placement, and a bunch of other stuff is never learned by these young and up and coming "producers"/music makers... Acoustics FIRST LOL... Ya right... Too much like reading the manual.
Great video as always!

I love Cakewalk. Rich set of features and a nice UI to play with.

I still use SoundBridge. Does the job with no headaches.

Have used Magix Musicmaker for a decade, but the problems and compatibility with VST made me go over to Cakewalk in the end.

Another brilliant breakdown, especially when finances are so difficult for people at the moment. 👍

Ardour is really sweet when using it on a Linux machine. I installed the Linux Audio Workstation packages and Ardour and a host of other really cool music production programs came with it, including Audacity, LMMS, and a really amazing drum sequencer that I can't remember the name of right now. When I switched to Windows I tried it out but it seemed off. Also it wouldn't let me use USB mics, which in the Linux version it had. All around it is a well equipped DAW for professional producers. I've used Ableton since Live 9 and really like the workload so that's my go-to.

Oh Nautilus is the drum sequencer. There is a windows version that is free too

Excellent video Zane, the advice at the end was spot on, in my opinion that learning just makes music creation much more fun.

Brother, your channel is sensational! I like reaper and waveform, reaper is great because of how light it is but for some things it is kind of complicated. Could you do a tutorial producing electronic rhythms like tech house or deep house? I would greatly appreciate it

Total Newbie here, just found your channel today and subscribed!

- Using iPhone for now to capture the vocals
- want to use my PC to create music song around it.
- may have 1 or 2 instruments input, but mostly just want to create a sample voice recoding “(voice memo)”and then add software instruments included in the program.
- not cloud based

Which 3 would you recommend on that criteria for starters?

Edit - just watched your video on entry-level audio interfaces for home recording and I’m wondering if I should buy one of those with the complementary audio software…?

A couple video ideas- video per DAW breakdown, who its for and who its not; and DAWs to avoid (infrequent updates, hostile to customers, possibly not perpetual license, bothed platform support)
