The main reason L is the smartest character in Death Note is because he's always calm and takes the most risks out of all the Task Force members. He knew Kira's killings were supernatural and that Kira has weaknesses, so he confronted Light in person to see if he could exploit and expose him, despite him having a very high chance of dying.

People say Light is smarter but I don't believe that at all. He's way too emotional sometimes and has more of a fragile ego than L does. (Not to mention he gets way too cocky to the point where he smirked evilly next to L a few times and I'm pretty sure L caught him doing so.) Light had supernatural powers and unknown rules on his side, yet L was able to keep up with him and even outsmart him through brains.

I admire the way he analyses the inconsistencies and with logic comes to understand Kira's purpose. He does it in episode 6 when meeting the task force and exposing the experiments on criminals. He trusts himself with the answers he comes up with, thanks to multiple elements coming together - another example is deducing the existance of the second Kira.

In episode 8, during surveillance he felt something was off with Light. He again spotted the inconsistent death of the 2 simple criminals. He always spots the changes in Kira's modus operandi.

This are the qualities every detective or intelligence analyst needs, and you explained it. Good video and good topic

"Dont believe in coincidence." All u gotta do is realise that behind everything that's happening/happened is reason, nothing "JUST" happened.
Behind every action is reason.
When u write that into your mind, you'll start looking for reasons....
Noone says something just randomly, emotions, situation that person is in, stress, words he heard from opposite person talking....it all affects what he says, and even if he doesnt think abt it, his brain is affected by these things and makes decitions by these things....

I call step one drawing lines. When hearing people's stories you should be able to draw lines between everything connecting everything. If your lines don't connect you know you either missing some information and need to go over the story and find out who you need to speak to next, or you know someone has lied
Point number 2 you are correct coincidences do.not exist
Next few points are spot on
Putting yourself I someone else's shoes is a skill in and among itself. It's something a lot of people aren't truly capable of
Inconsistencies is part n of my step one "drawing lines".
I dig the video, deductive reasoning is something I have spent a lot of time on developing and your guide to thinking like L is pretty spot on. If you apply this to every day life its a game changer for better and for worse. Makes it hard to ever trust anyone when you start to see through everyone's crap hahahha
