To be fair Ryuk could have ended it at any time and got a lot more of Lights life span, he chose to take his life when he was about to die in a few minutes from bleeding anyway, it proves that Ryuk really respected Light and wasn't as cold hearted as we think. It was all entertainment for Ryuk and Light certainly provided more than enough of that, you could say in some aspect Ryuk represents us, the audience and the greatest respect Ryuk could have given him at that moment was end him painlessly and uphold his promise because there was nothing left for Light, he was utterly defeated.
