Just a few short years ago, he made a career out of entertaining Ukraine. Now as the nation's president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy's defiance of Russia is inspiring people amid the invasion.

Zelenskyy's videos to the public throughout the crisis have reassured and inspired his people. Days after the invasion began and as Russian forces approached, the United States offered him support to escape. He reportedly rejected the offer with these now-famous words: "I need ammunition, not a ride."

Check out the previous president, Yulia Timoshenko, who made sure the main energy supplier in the Ukraine (fed by Russian gas) was in the hands of her oligarch husband's family. Putin is doing what he did in Russia, making sure his energy exports to the West are not controlled by commercial interests.

The Ukraine is of critical national interest to Russia, and not of national interest to the West. So it was clear that meddling by the US in the Ukraine will deeply antagonize Russia. American commentators have said this as long ago as the Bush II presidency. The idea that Russia would allow the Ukraine to join NATO was wrong, deadly wrong as it turned out.

And now we have a war. Which may expand if NATO countries allow the Ukraine staging grounds. This is a dangerous time in which the USA is led by an incompetent president, and has a foreign secretary who appears to be completely out of depth, and oblivious to the effects of his words when he recently implied that the Ukraine will join NATO. The Russians invaded soon after that.
