How to BACKUP, MOVE and RESTORE DaVinci Resolve DATABASES
Probably one of the most overlooked and most needed things to know when using any version of DaVinci Resolve.

This tutorial will give you a comprehensive system to make sure you never lose a Resolve database. Can move and restore your database with ease and never worry about losing a project. Or having a resolve database fail, disappear or be inaccessible.

I discuss some additional programs to use and hardware that you will need.

DaVinci Resolve is the world’s only solution that combines editing, color correction, visual effects, motion graphics and audio post production all in one software tool! Its elegant, modern interface is fast to learn and easy enough for new users, yet powerful for professionals. DaVinci Resolve lets you work faster and at a higher quality because you don’t have to learn multiple apps or switch software for different tasks. That means you can work with camera original quality images throughout the entire process. It’s like having your own post production studio in a single app! Best of all, by learning DaVinci Resolve, you’re learning how to use the exact same tools used by Hollywood professionals!

High end professionals working on feature films and television shows use DaVinci Resolve more than any other solution! That’s because it’s known for incredible quality and creative tools that are light years beyond the competition. You get DaVinci’s Emmy™ award winning image technology with 32‑bit float processing, patented YRGB color science and a massive wide gamut color space for the latest HDR workflows. You also get the legendary quality of Fairlight audio processing for the best sound in the industry! With DaVinci Resolve, you get the same exact tools professional colorists, editors, VFX artists and sound engineers use every day to finish your favorite films and streaming television shows!

DaVinci Resolve 17 features new image processing for the latest wide gamut HDR, a powerful audio engine, immersive 3D audio workflows and more! Colorists get new HDR grading tools, AI based magic mask and more. Fairlight upgrades mouse and keyboard based edit selection tools along with Fairlight audio core, a high performance audio engine that supports 2,000 tracks on a single system! Editors get a new metadata based "slate" view with bin dividers to organize and find footage faster, zoomed waveforms for audio editing, smart reframing, proxies, live effect previews and more. In addition, effects, titles or transitions created on the Fusion page can be used on the edit and cut pages!

The edit page is the world’s most advanced professional non-linear editor. The familiar track layout, dual monitor design and traditional workflow makes it easy for new users to learn while still being powerful enough for professional editors. It’s perfect for larger projects such as feature films, television shows, streaming, commercials, documentaries and more. The edit page features drag and drop editing, context sensitive automatic trimming tools, fully customizable keyboard shortcuts so you can work faster, and a library full of hundreds of titles, transitions, and effects that you can add and animate. You also get complete media management, organization and timeline management tools.

IF YOU'RE MISSING THE BU ICON ... click the "I" (as in "info" circle) next to the database name, it will expand the box and you will see "Back up" and "Reveal in Finder

Thank you sooo much you are a lifesaver - great little details which could take days or weeks to figure out...

Thank you! You saved my bacon - thought I'd lost the lot! Fortunately, I had backed-up my db, just couldn't figure out how to load the darn thing. It's not exactly an intuitive process - hopefully it will be better in the next iteration.

Thanks CineChimp! Had a few questions on this!
-1:33 when you say external migration disk, do you just mean my SSD / External drive plugged into my laptop?
-For your day to day workflow, do you save a EDL file of the project at the end of each day to have the day's work precautionary back up in case the database fails?
-Just the same, how often do you back up your databases? Daily? Or just when you move between computers and need to restore a database from one computer to another?

Thanks for this. I don’t really like the way resolve does this though. Its a bit of a pain. Especially for freelance editors with multiple clients.

Great video! thank you for the info. I am restoring my Mac to clean it up and make it run a little better and need to do this. What would be considered the "System Disk" on a Macbook?

G'daya mate. Even though I've used resolve a fair bit databases confuse me a lot. Wonder if you could help me out. I created another database from a laptop to go to an external drive. I've since bumped up the hard drive capacity but I can't get it to change the file pathways atutomatically. I keep getting the warning to change it in project settings. Which is a pain every time I create a new project. How do i get back to the default local database? Would appreciate any help in laymens terms. Loved the relaxed way you present the vid. Still over my head though. Cheers

Thank you for this awesome video! I have a question. I failed to backup my databases (I've learned my lesson & will do it from now on). Our IT department created a new profile on my PC for me, so when I opened Resolve, none of my projects showed up. I had to go under my old profile & copy all my projects, then paste them into the new profile. It worked...almost. Now when I'm logged in under my new profile all my projects are show up when I open Resolve, but all the video clips are offline (my other media shows up, though). When I try to reconnect the video clips, those media files do not show! I watched your video on reconnecting video & tried those methods, but nothing is working. Any insight?

Hi! Thanks for this video! Couple questions if you don't mind please. You say you should back-up EDL files in case something goes wrong with restoring your data-base. What do you mean by this? Is there some sort of error message that could come up which could then be fixed by importing that EDL file in order to fix the issue?

Hey dude! thanks for the thorough video. I like your presentation and um... Aussie! I'm wondering if you can help. My old Mac Pro running Resolve16 died recently, and I just took the leap to a Mac Studio. Anyway, I have no way of exporting my Resolve projects and databases, though I have the original files on disk, project folders, .db files in Application Support etc.. But I'm at a loss for how to restore my database with just these raw files. I've tried copying them to the new Library structure, but nothing's getting recognised. And I haven't found a way to import them. Any ideas where I should go from here?

What? How did you restore? I have no such icon showing in my copy of Resolve 18 (Windows PC). I cannot figure out how to restore to an older version of my database.

Great info. So where on the system disk is the best location for a new database? Right next to the local database?

Would exporting a project as a .dra file fulfill the same job as the .edl file did in this video?

Hi hope you can help, I have a load of exclamation marks on my databases and just can't connect them. I use external hard drives and now I plugged one in it's a different letter from the original so doesn't recognise it. How can I fix this please?

Hey! Your video is great and informative. But you show everything inside Davinci, I mean after opening Davinci. My big problem is, that my Software won't start. So my choice would be to reinstall. But I don't want to lose hundreds, maybe thousands of (often manually) synced videos in over 20 projects. And here is the question. Will I lose all my saved projects if I reinstall, (and if I do I will also upgrade from 17 to 18 already), as I can not just simply copy project files to a backup folder. I don't know where they are to find, not like in other VE Softwares, or DAWs or anything usual.
Do you have a tip for me? How do I copy/backup files without opening DR?

What if I didn't create a database backup but I have all the older drives in my new computer, but a fresh install of Davinici? Are all my project lost forever?
