I mixed them all together, slightly improved the intro and added some effects to it all.

Maverick: "Cougar was doing just fine."

I know Iceman looked like a dick who was just antagonizing Maverick. But in a wartime situation, he's the guy you'd wanna weld wings with.

Val Kilmer rarely encapsulates the "by the book" but also badass pilot who follows the rules but is just as good if not better than Maverick. It's not easy to pull off. He was great at showing leadership nonetheless.

The time he tapped into what appeared to be his arrogance, not wanting Maverick and Goose to come on top during an exercise, was the moment Goose died and it wasn't pointed out, but it was because of his jet wash that the F-14A got that fatal compressor stall that was unrecoverable.

I think Iceman realized the severity of the situation and although there wasn't any repercussions for him, I believe he took it to heart, as evident by the attempt of comforting Maverick for losing Goose. He knew they were close.

All this considered, I think this is what reinforced his friendship with Maverick in later years, because in a real conflict, Maverick proved that he wasn't just a hotshot show off, but he had what it takes to have control over a situation like fighting the MiGs in the final dogfight of the first movie.

That's why Iceman had Maverick's back in later years and missions and wanted him to come to Top Gun as an instructor because he was one of the few pilots with the skill and experience that could benefit the Navy.

A small scene that fleshes out the dynamic between these two hotheads.
