How to Identify Bad Engine Compression Just by Listening to it Crank

In this video we explain how you can tell if an engine has a compression problem just by listening to it crank over. The car we use in the example is a 2000 model Volvo V70 2.4 petrol, but the principal of what you need to listen for applies to any engine including diesels. Of course we would recomend following up with with an actual compression test before commiting to any expensive work, but this test is great for initial direction.

Thank you for the great explanations of what you're doing and why you're doing it I really appreciate that. I have a 2001 Honda Civic that right now is not starting just cranks most of the time so I'm wondering about compression though now because just today I noticed that it was kind of making an uneven cranking noise earlier so that's got me worried. I just I'm just curious though if it is a compression issue does that mean my engine is pretty much done in?

A sticking valve or lifter can do the odd sounding crank too.. If my Jeep sits long enough itll crank oddly like that.. but if i crank it the next day or few days.. itll sound normal

Hey are those not fuel injectors? Are they still called spark plugs?

Hi, while cranking with no spark plug and I feel air blowing out of plug hole. Does this mean there's compression for that cylinder? Great channel. Thanks

I encounter some pretty decent hesitation every time i put my foot on the gas i changed everything in my car and still nothing. Last time i did a compression test i had the exact same irregular crank sound but my compression readings were very good. Is it possible to have a problem with the valves and still get good compression numbers? Im really disappointed.

Does failed spark plug causes no compression

So the first sound is good engine while the second is bad right?

Yup, I was already aware of this. :-)

This car doesn’t have compression and I don’t have money
there were no warning sounds before that happened

That difference in sounds can also be the car trying to start if the plugs wasn’t remove
