Funny thing is, by the 1940s, unisex clothing was encouraged. I once found a book of reprinted knitting patterns in my local public library. It contains a section called "matched mates, " which encouraged women to knit practical coloroblock wool sweaters for both themselves and their husbands. The pattern of small squares in different colors was ideal for working with recycled yarn. That look came back in the late '80s when the book was published.
