It really is like a second language. You talk alot like my kid and often I have to kinda translate her language to neurotypical people. Thank you for this podcast

Isolated, yes. In grade school, I always had to sit by the teacher, or in the back of the class. How embarrassing. The psychologist in 4th grade said that I was just "different." But that was in 1981. That severely accentuated the feeling of isolation. I guess I was a disturbance. I am surenthe ADD/ADHD had something to do with being disturbing 🤷‍♀️

Thank you for saying that about small talk, I have worked in fast food so I learned how to do small talk with the customers and was told that I was really good at it. I did it because that was what was expected from you, in other environments I don't see the point (and it is really draining just listening to people when I am in the area not even a part of the conversation). I have asked support workers to help me with emails occasionally and one of the things that they will quite often say is that I need an opening sentence before I get to the real topic (along the lines of I hope you are doing well kind of thing) because otherwise it comes across as rude and blunt. The thing that gets me the most about that was that they agreed that doing so was fluffy crap but that it was socially expected to be there so I would be more effective if I did it too.

hahaha - I need to remind myself when people start small talk about whether they are wanting an emotional interaction not an analysis of the current weather patterns and do not want to talk about it for more then 5sec 🤣

Hi Orion, I’ve recently come across your main channel and loving the format of this new Podcast channel. Loving what you do. I’m in UK and as a NT I’m a big advocate for Autism in my community and workplace. Both my wife and both boys are on the Spectrum and I’ve learned I have to adapt myself to live in their world rather than expecting them to adapt to mine. I’ve recently started to deliver Autism Acceptance training in my community and workplace which is co-delivered with Autistic people. We use Autism Acceptance because Awareness is not enough. I’ve been telling people to visit your videos as brilliant examples of what it’s like as an Autistic person and your lived experience. Hope you don’t mind me spreading the word about your work.
Thank you for sharing ❤

I think it's not crazy to think of yourself as an alien from a different planet and lower your expectations with regards to how other people communicate with you - and if you meet someone who is a little more open-minding and patient then yey - otherwise plan some time to re-regulate after some unpleasant social interaction - I normally default to Bunnings and walk up and down all the aisles and look and tinker with things - lucky I work as a computer programmer so people are not surprised if you're a little weird 🤠

What others see: bubbly person who talks a lot.
What others don't see: someone desperately trying to connect with anyone to the point of hurting themselves.

Thank you!! My life has not been the easiest, and I've wondered why that is the case. My son was diagnosed (too late for me, at 57). Your advice and understanding that comes across on your channel have helped.
