It's not a massive coding issue. It's a massive incompetence crisis

It's hilarious that here in Argentina we didn't notice because the software that failed is too expensive so it's not in the country, being a 3rd world country has its benefits

The black screen of death is even scarier.

It should be noted that the only reason nothing happened with regards to Y2K is that a ton of people worked really hard to fix it before it became a problem, we knew it was coming and took preventative measures.

Dont fall for mass hysteria. This is not a Windows issue, this is a Crowdstrike issue. If you have never heard of Crowdstrike, you are not using it. Crowdstrike is a 3rd party security update company that bigger corporations use to protect their computers. Your PC will not be stuck in a boot loop, nothing will happen to it. Many youtubers call this a "Windows" or "Microsoft" issue and make it seem like this is going to happen to every Windows machine, rather than the ones that use a specific paid software

0:44 International BSOD day is so diabolical, but so accurate.

My company uses CS. The only reason we could function at all on Friday was because my co-worker (who was working the late shift this week) noticed his laptop BSOD at midnight, right before going to bed, and sounded the alarm. Thanks to that and our admins working all night, they restored most of our servers in time for work. I got to help our users all day. It was bad, but could have been way worse.

1900s: in the future we'll have flying cars
2024: Flying cars are a terrible idea, people can barely drive on the ground, accidents would just become more common and devastating

Nothing happened with Y2K because companies busted ass to get it fixed. Hell in the movie Office Space (1999) his job is he's fixing code for Y2K

Nothing happened on Y2K precisely because the issue was predicted. The entire software and firmware industry worked furiously for years to make it not a problem. It’s a bit like saying the ozone layer turned out not to be a problem - it was a serious problem, but we identified the issue and put a lot of work in to solve it.

It's funny how the story of Y2K has become "everyone was worried but nothing actually happened". While it's true that ultimately pretty much nothing happened, that's only because a lot of people spent a lot of time and money fixing things before the date rolled over. It's kinda like if people summed up the movie Armageddon as "people were worried about an asteroid but it just missed and nothing happened".

Apparently there is seven people who can turn off the internet permanently. Imagine if there was a glitch so bad that it caused the seven people to remove the internet without knowing.

Linux basically got free advertisement from this with its name being thrown around in articles along with Mac as not being affected.
