The Golden Rule

“It was this common ‘that’s not okay’ moment.”

Days after the 2016 election, a Muslim student at the University of Texas came to a march protesting the election of Donald Trump. Attending the same rally was a Trump supporter sporting a sign that read “Proud to Be Deplorable” and a “Make America Great Again” cap.

Watch this conversation between two people who, despite being on opposite ends of the political spectrum, remember a moment that day that unexpectedly brought them together.

Presented as part of StoryCorps’ One Small Step initiative, a national effort to encourage people to engage in a conversation with someone they may not agree with politically.

Huge Respect to Story corps here. It would be so easy to jump on one of the bandwagons and polarize, or not talk at all about these topics, but you guys were willing to share a story that not only leaves you as a neutral, but engaged, party but also delievers the best sort of message that one can possibly send. Listen to and respect each other, no matter their stance.
Hopefully messages like this will spread far and wide to improve the political systems and attitudes of the world.

A lot of this stems from wanting to be heard, understood, and respected. It’s difficult to see beyond someone who follows a person that exhibits such vitriol towards other human beings. That is the point of contention. We have many things in common with each other as humans, but when lack of compassion for others is demonstrated, that’s when communication shuts down. Good on them both for coming together to talk and share.

This comment section is gross and missed the entire point of the video.
We need to learn to love eachother so we can discuss our differences instead of going to war like we're tribalistic animals.

Thank you for bringing love and humanity to these frightening times.

I never liked those social media post of "If you think 'so and so' then unfriend me" or something along those lines. Things would remain the same, conflict remaining, nothing resolved.

I have a friend. And oh my!!! We couldn't be further apart on our views and stances. Were still friends to this day. We just never bring up politics

This is at least the third time this video has been uploaded.
Is there a reason?

I mean it’s one of the best, but, what’s up?

The irony is that those in Redhats may look the other way if the hijab was snatched. Ancestors with red hats weren't kind to those darker. I do appreciate their story of "Do unto others" though.

it's so nice that she wanted to protect his hat, but does this young man understand that Trump had a Muslim ban?

The two of you are wonderful! As a conservative lesbian i also lost a lot of friends just because I supported and voted for Trump, I kept trying to make them understand, I'm not pushing my views on you, so stop pushing your viewers on me! But alas they couldn't see past it and now I have 1 friend. It really sucks being in your 40's and only having 1 friend.
